Sounds a bit protection rackety. And hopefully XR have improved on their shit opsec.
Nice marathon you have there. Shame if someone was to mess it up. I can protect it from you.
Hey maybe we could protest one of your rivals?
Mfers are going to be throwing paint at each other
A small part of me wants Just Stop Oil to say no so we could potentially see skirmishes break out between XR and them. Colourful battles that at the least, and despite what anyone thinks of the groups, could be quite entertaining
London Marathon, in a post-Boston world, is a high risk terror event that already uses so many police recourses for the day…
I would seriously hope that XR/JSO decide to do the intelligent thing here and pick another day to have their fight with society and the Government
The London Marathon stops traffic and encourages walking/running far more than any protest ever could, so it makes sense they wouldn’t want to interrupt it
When are we gonna make an example of these “protesters”
Arrr yes XR, because they are renowned for not doing shit when they say they won’t.
We won’t protest your marathon honest…. Just ignore that van of paint it’s nothing to do with us we promise.
“Brasher is also hoping to speak to Just Stop Oil in the next 24 hours to persuade them to not to stop a race that raised £58.4m for charity last year.”
I’m not really sure how they’d stop the race.
Sure, they may delay the leaders (good luck stopping guys running that fast at you), but holding back hundreds of people?
They do need to pick and choose their targets these groups. The protestor at the snooker was just baffling, what a *nice* sport. It can be played with no tech, the biggest events are just in theatres or concert halls. The crowd don’t get rowdy. Issues perhaps with betting but that didn’t seem to get mentioned. You look at The Grand National on the other hand – a lot of people started talking about the cruelty around horse racing and the group got a lot of support. Disrupting trains didn’t make a lot of sense considering they are a solution to reliance on cars, but closing down a motorway or city centre does (even if it still pissed people off). A running event with a lot of people getting fit, raising money for charities and again reliant on little tech – good. It even closes down big parts of the city from cars!
(I know I am talking about different groups here, but functionally they seem to work the same)
I think disrupting the marathon would be an extremely stupid decision. Relatively neutral targets like the snooker and arts galleries already get protestors sneered at more than protesting things that are especially bad for the climate.
But people run the marathon to raise money for important causes, including environmental ones. Its not like the money wouldn’t go to the charities if they blocked the roads. But its a really bad look to disrespect a guy with cancer research uk on his shirt.
