What a stupid pointless article by both the mirror and the guardian
This kind of logic is so stupid. When we’re talking about symbols specifically celebrating slavery or those who profited from it then it’s different but when you start expending that to the second-order effects of Britain’s past, such as the way some cities developed because of Britain’s industry and wealth that resulted from Empire, then where do you stop?
Most of our history, most of European history, is not moral and good and that history shaped our industries, borders and cultures. It’s embedded into almost everything. You can only realistically address the egregious and direct examples such as having a statue celebrating a slaver or more recent examples such as Ireland.
We need to keep telling these nutters to fuck off with their obsession with a tiny portion of historical slavery. No-one fucking cares.

We all need to pack up and leave, we are all guilty by being born in the UK. /s
Very true they should both be docked 30 points in the Premier League it’s only fair
They’re football clubs, unless they are currently dealing in slavery, celebrating slavery or endorsing it in anyway. What the fuck was the point in bringing this up?
No one would have even known if it hadn’t been brought up. Everyone would have gone on watching football, wearing the logo and somehow magically simultaneously not endorsing slavery. Exactly as it has been FOR FUCKING DECADES.
I’m going to start a campaign to rename Arsenal due to the fact they are literally named after the place the British Empire built its weapons. Any suggestions? Islington Wanderers? And replace the cannon obviously as it’s so offensive… They can have Piers Morgan on their badge!
Yes… I’m a Spurs fan.
Everything is linked to slavery in some way. Regardless of where you are born, race or whatever, people enslaved other people. That’s how it were and as long as it doesn’t happen now then move the fuck on. Treat people with respect and decency. Acknowledge the past but stop this sort of nonsense.
Honestly the ones complaining about this need to look into their history. Maybe they’ll do us a favour and shut up.
Next week:
is A.F.C. Bournemouth’s badge offensive to the bald?
is Bristol Rovers badge advocating piracy?
Stay tuned to this riveting culture wars distraction while the country goes down the pan as those in charge line their pockets.
Guardian and Mirror are absolute trash.
Gotta push some ‘war’ all the fucking time as well.
The Guardian article’s logic is basically:
There is a ship on the Manchester coat of arms, and on the clubs’ badges.
Some ships carried slaves
Therefore there is a slavery link.
But even on its own terms the article is stupid. It points out, for example, that Manchester was the third-largest port in the UK. Yes, it was. After the Ship Canal opened. Which was in 1894, more than *sixty fucking years* after slavery was outlawed in the British Empire, and after it was abolished in most of the rest of the world.
It is the reachiest reach that ever reached, and is Exhibit A for how it’s not just the right that likes to stoke culture wars. It’s like that American university that banned the word “field” in case it was too traumatising for anyone.
Maybe they should ban The Devil from the Man U crest, surely it’s offensive to most religious people, and also to atheists it’s a representation of a stupid imaginary concept. You’ve go to balance that against offending devil worshippers.
Outrage bait – they know that articles expressing ridiculous extremist views get more of the “interactions” that their advertisers pay for, and this is the result. The solution is to ignore this nonsense.
Odd then wouldn’t you say that in Lincoln Square in Manchester is a statue of Abraham Lincoln along with a letter thanking the Mancunian workers for their solidarity during emancipation.
That solidarity? Refusal to process cotton harvested by slaves.
The Guardian can fuck off! It hasn’t been the Manchester Guardian since 1959 so god knows why they are focusing on Manchester and not London (where they have been based for over half a century) for their nonsense.
