Web Summit funding of €1m for The Ditch as editor rejects ‘anti-government’ tag

  1. It’s good to see investigative journalism being carried out and exposing the current Government. Knowing that Paddy Cosgrave is a pretty spiteful character I’d be worried this is just a personal vendetta for him. Now the stuff that’s coming out is true and that’s good but I don’t like the idea of a weird tech bro millionaire with his own personal newspaper to go after whoever he feels like. Likewise if it was Denis O’Brien.

Also Cosgraves best friend just got a gig with Russia Today and he’s been cosying up to the Grayzone recently. I’d be a bit worried in that regard too.

  2. The Ditch is very much anti-FG and FF. I just hope whoever is in government next, even if that is SF, also shuns Paddy as a dopey “entrepreneur” and we still have a publication that’ll actually hold government ministers to some standards. Because SIPO can’t/don’t want to do it.

  3. Wild that an events company is funding this sort of thing. There’s so much popcorn still to come on this. A blessing for those of us who love watching gobshites with personality disorders try to destroy each other.

  4. look, I think its undeniable that the ditch is biased, and paddy is a fucking tool with a bitchy anti government agenda as they didn’t give him everything he wanted, but the ditch does a lot of good work and investigative journalism that most papers wouldn’t even bother with

  5. The current establishment have been in bed with Dennis O Brien for years and he controls an awful lot more media than one publication

All media is biased and very heavily biased

  6. I ain’t no fan of Paddy Cosgrave, who let’s be honest is just a glorified event planner with a bit of a superiority complex.

That being said if if he is willing to fund a media outlet that is attempting to balance out political reporting that lately seems to have been hyperfixated on Sinn Fein while at the same time ignoring FFG’s shenanigans then I’m all for that.

I also think the recent attacks on the Ditch by various politicians and journalists is an attempt to harm their reputation because they’ve probably got a lot more political dirt ready to be released.

  7. I know The Taoiseach mentioned Russia but FF scares people into voting for them by calling Stein Fein communists and rural Irish people are scared of communism. I’ve heard this often enough from my own friends and family who accept what they say as truth and not propaganda by the Irish parties in power. I think the Taoiseach let himself down by his verbal outburst. It was petty and pathetic.

  8. Imagine spending 1m on a grudge because your web event didn’t get to a POTUS visit level of preferential treatment. Paddy is an unsufferable tool with laughable delusions of grandeur.

Still though anti-government is OK, ideally it’s objective and all parties are scrutinised in the same way. But will they be? I doubt it with that gobshite as puppet master.

  9. Bit out of the loop on all this stuff.

Have The Ditch been found to have messed any stories up/reported on stuff that turned out to not be factual?

Honestly reading these comments I can’t seem to get a handle on whether they’re liked, disliked or somewhere in between.

  10. I think they’ll be a great novelty while they do a few investigative pieces that appeal to people.

But once you give them credibility and popularity and their own biases start to leak out in more undesirable ways?

Some people lauding The Ditch are the very same people that would decry the biased media in the UK that pushed for Brexit and prop up the Tories.
