>He also gave a reading that was almost three times over the legal limit for cocaine, Mr Mulgrew said. Flanagan said he had consumed it two days prior to the crash.
I had no idea there was a legal limit for cocaine (like with alcohol). Anyone know the amount of Bolivian marching powder that is considered legal? (I know the cocaine used to be routinely prescribed by doctors until the USA went crazy with their War on Drugs during Nixon’s presidency.)
Killing people when behind a wheel always leads to the most pathetic sentencing. 5 years, 7 months is a pathetic sentence, it’s nothing. High on cocaine, watching TikTok, crashed into a car, sending it 3-4 feet into the air and causing two people inside to burn to death? Should be 20 years. Also banned from driving for 5 years? Rubbish. Should never drive again.
>Flanagan admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to five years and seven months at Luton Crown Court.
About in the middle as sentences for Death By Dangerous Driving go. The maximum is now life, but unless someone does an impression of the Selby rail crash again I can’t see anyone getting much more than 10.
Also, claiming he’d took the cocaine two days before seems a bit daft, given that cocaine famously doesn’t stay in your system for very long.
Ridiculously lean sentence here!
> He pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Monday to five years and seven months in prison.
Flanagan has also been disqualified from driving for four years and nine months.
He killed two people while high on cocaine and using his phone at the wheel FFS.
Ridiculous sentence.
He sounds like a lot of people, a lot of people fiddle with stuff whilst driving, especially phones – and also a lot of people use drugs and probably don’t know if they would pass or fail a test in the event of a serious accident.
He’s been jailed for 5 years but banned from driving for 4 years. Does that 4 years start once he’s released?
Horrific. Ridiculous how you can literally get away with murder as long as you’re behind the wheel.
The “high on cocaine” is a red herring as it was essentially a trace amount of the substance. The cunt watching tiktok had everything to do with it.
Why the hell is TikTok given such prominence in the headline when it has barely any actual relevance to the story? It doesn’t matter what he was specifically doing on his phone at the time, just that he was using his phone. Theres nothing particularly special about TikTok that caused the incident. I can’t help but suspect that the reason is that negative stories about TikTok are trendy at the moment, meaning that the BBC is engaging in the kind of clickbaity horseshit they’re supposed to be above.
“Driver kills mother and daughter, sentenced to 5 years 7 months” would be more appropriate. This passive thing to remove guilt and causality is terrible.
“Person YYY died of of gun shot” <> “XXX murdered YYY with a gun”
At least he tried to save them from the fire he caused.
I remember this happening, it was just up the road from us, the bloody road is dangerous enough without people like this man was hurtling around… Awful, just absolutely awful.
>He also gave a reading that was almost three times over the legal limit for cocaine
Theres a *legal limit for cocaine*??????
People using mobile devices while driving now kills more people than drunk drivers yet the sentencing is ridiculously low.
you have got to be kidding me with that sentence
*they fucking burned to death*, and even if they hadn’t, he should have gotten time consistent with an intentional act
I would do everyone caught driving whilst watching videos on their phone for attempted manslaughter whether they had hit anyone or not
You’d like to think that’s the kind of event that would change your ways. I’d probably not want to get behind the wheel ever again after that. Clearly a huge fuck up on his part but rarely does it come at such a high price. So tragic for the extended family with the father already past. God damn that’s terrible.
Ive witnessed somebody driving a lwb van down the motorway at 70mph in the middle lane watching TikTok
I bet every single last person in the comments here has driven dangerously at least one point in their lives.
Five years and seven months “sentence” and a four year and nine month driving “ban”.
Great! He can get right back to it in a matter of years. Nothing stopping him from doing it with a bigger, badder car too!
As it’s always been said, if you want to kill someone, do it with a car.
Funny how the headline mentions TikTok but somehow misses the cocaine.
