Russia and NATO Agree to Begin Negotiations This Winter

  1. I still doubt the recent Russian diplomatic drive is anything but a smokescreen.

Russia will have to make a decision on use of force soon, if they haven’t made it already. I doubt these negotiations will deliver anything close to what would be needed for Russia to walk away. Russians themselves left Russia no option here.

  2. Not sure what there is to agree on? NATO will not kick out East European members and they will not agree to stop expanding.

I understand that Russia does not want a large build up of NATO forces in East Europe, but there was never a large presence of NATO forces before all of this started.

  3. Putin understands annexing Ukraine would spell the end of Russia

    Best case scenario:

Ukraine joins the EU, Belarus can join Russia

Ukrainians are very proud of their Polish ancestry, it wouldn’t work, Putin.

  4. I hope that’s our glorious leaders realizing they’ve overplayed their hand and agreeing to an inconsequential face-saving ritual they can spin as a glorious diplomatic success at home.

  5. I’d say Russian withdrawal from Ukraine (including Crimea) and Georgia in return to no NATO membership is a decent compromise. They can join the EU if they want, these two countries will have the Finland treatment after all.
