Don’t know whether the guys understands the meaning of the flag or is just plain racist. Anyhow, it’s up there on a fair in Belgium…

  1. ??

Stop overthinking. Its just a flag on a fair bruh, just have fun and enjoy

Not everything u look at is racist on purpose

Edit: man do people not have a life? I bet not a lot of people probably dont know this flag. I had to search it up and sure, its a flag from 1800’s from america. Litteraly has nothing to do with belgium even

Guess im too mature to care about a flag from 1800s lol

  2. That flag isn’t as politically charged in Europe as it is in America. It doesn’t mean anything to most Europeans and it’s usually just for decoration, or some European guy stumbled upon American country music, looked it up, saw the flag and now associates it with that.

Although to be fair, the only time I have seen someone displaying that flag in public, was in the windows of a deteriorated van in an Aldi parking lot and the people inside looked exactly like the stereotypical description of what Americans call “trailer trash”.

  3. I’ve seen Confederate flags flying in Ertvelde as well. Stepped out to the terrace at Van Steenberge a few years ago and a construction crew had Confederate flags tied to their equipment.

  4. You used to see Confederate flags in town festivals and pubs in rural Germany up until the last few years. To them it was a romantic icon of the Wild West. They had no idea all the history behind it. I’d suspect it is the same thing in this case.

Fortunately folks here in Germany have clued in recently and you don’t see those flags nearly as much.

  5. Ik zie de laatste tijd wel meer en meer gigantische pickups rondrijden in het landelijke middenwestvlaanderen, we blijven toch maar zever importeren uit dat beloofde land…

  6. That flag just doesn’t have any meaning to Belgians. The Dukes of Hazard come to mind, most people would be hard-pressed to tell you who general Lee was.

There’s very seirous history with this flag in the US, but anywhere else not so much.

  7. Yall are daft ass Hell, he is not racist for putting that flag up. Don’t let The retardation that is The USA unfluence you.

  8. My opinion on this photo…: really?

It’s a kermis/fair… a fair is full of random props. The owner of this place is probably of a certain age and definitely not following the new wave of identity politics of the US. To him/her this is just another stupid prop people can win. If you really think this is a problem, it’s probably time to evaluate why you are fixating on things like this and trying to find bad in it while the reasoning is quite obvious.

And if this shocks you, I can pinpoint you the exact location of a souvenir shop in Istanbul that sells nazi statues, dutch nazi SS pamphlets, nazi rings etc. I can even pinpoint you some more locations in EU that do too :). The world does not revolve around EU/US’s sensitivities.

  9. You can make a problem out of everything if you want.
There’s a fair in Bruges, could it be.. :p
Was a sunny day today in Bruges

  10. Aren’t these flags a prize you can win?
I remember some of these stands with a whole row of flags you could win, ranging from these, to pictures of cannabis leaves, to band logo’s of motorhead or slipknot or whatever…
I think for many people it’s just some random americana they remember from movies/tv-shows

  11. Even here in Mexico most people won’t even know what that flag means, though we are next to southern US, stop bringing your fucking beefs to the rest of the world!!

  12. As an American who joined this sub to explore a possible move to Belgium, glad to know fairs would look almost identical to the ones I know here

  13. It could be a coincidence and they may not know better, but the combination of the confederate flag and the upside down American flag gives all sorts of bad vibes.

  14. Kan mij geen Reet schelen. Ik ben geen Amerikaan en wat daar gebeurd kan mij ook geen kloot schelen

  15. Alot of woke people on here, and I mean the most authentic and positive way.

But for, dare I say, the common and certainly the older European, the so-called Rebel Flag isn’t about racism, but just a piece of americana. About being badass, like a rebel, as seen on *the Dukes of Hazard* or *Smokey and the bandit* (child from the 70ies here).

Only the last few years (some) people got more aware of its tainted connotation. But some are slower than others, is all.
