Hi all,

My maternal grandmother’s mother (great grandmother) was born on the 10th of September 1894 in Vieps, Landkreis Allenstein and it mentions the standesamt(birth office) to be Ramsau (which is today in Olsztyn, Poland) she was ethnically German and even has a German family name but from what I understand she left Olsztyn after 1920.

My maternal grandfather’s father was born in Ganot, Poland on the 31st of December 1883 and naturalized to Germany in 1942 so I assume he came to Germany around 1942.

I’m not sure where Ganot is though.

Thank you everyone and hopefully I should be able to also claim citizenship via descent to poland.

Also my grandfather spoke Polish so it looks like there is some Polish connection.

  1. Records that old, IF they survived two world wars, of course, are most likely in state archives now.

    “Gamot” could be Gamrot in Chełm Śląski, or perhaps a particularly bad misspelling of Zamość. However, looking at your previous posts, you have “Schitomir” for your maternal grandfather’s mother’s birth location, which I’m 99% sure is Żytomierz – currently Zhytomyr, Ukraine.

    Likewise, “Gamot” or whatever the actual name is, could be located in modern Ukraine or Belarus.

    Have you considered trying to put together a timeline and/or reconstruct your family’s known travels on a map? It might perhaps help narrow down the place.

    Before 1951, naturalizing in another country revoked one’s Polish citizenship by force of law, as (which is often ignored hereabout) did remaining outside of Polish territory for five consecutive years. Additionally, loss extended to the wife and children of a male citizen unless those children were legally adults at that point.
