American electrical engineering student here, will be graduating next year and am hoping to work in Germany following this. I speak German around the B2 level and am self-studying to attain the C1 level hopefully within the next year (not sure if that’s reasonable but [🤷](https://emojipedia.org/person-shrugging/))

My current plan is to get a job with an international company that has German roots or a huge German presence (ex. Siemens) and ask to be transferred to Germany. I was under the impression that it was really difficult to apply directly to positions in Germany but I’ve learned that may not be correct so I’m also considering just applying directly to German job postings. Any advice on how to go about this, what I can do in the time until I graduate to give myself an advantage, and if there’s a better path forward?

  1. Do you have a master’s? You won’t get an engineering job in Germany without a master’s.

Eta: unless you do an Ausbildung. For which you need c1 German. And you probably don’t want that. If you don’t have the MEng, your best bet is enrolling at a uni and getting a Werkstudent job. Then get a big kid job once you have the MEng.
