Two thirds of Britons ‘less proud’ of the UK than five years ago and feel country is in decline, poll shows

  1. Of course many will disagree about *why* they feel it’s in decline “too many immigrants” “too TERFy” “too woke” “Brexit bad” ” Brexit betrayed” etc etc

  2. For me, it all falls under a big umbrella of ‘we keep voting for useless shitheads’.

I wouldn’t mind so much if we got an ‘even Mussolini got the trains running on time’ brand of facism-lite but they are the worst AND embarrassingly incompetent.

Almost everything they do is a national embarrassment.

  3. our fossil fuels have been squandered so we will return to dropping in wealth, like we were before North Sea Oil came on tap
Left wingers are happy to call decline since Tory is in power, lots of right-wingers are endless staters that ‘Britian in in decline’ (for whatever reason, immigration, smart motorways etc)

  4. Two thirds of the country live in reality while the others are either in denial of the decline or to rich for it to effect them much

  5. It *is* in decline. What did Britons expect to happen when they left the 3rd biggest trading block economy in the world; one that was on their doorstep? On top of this, their current government are nothing to be proud of: they have made the UK look unreliable and untrustworthy.

  6. The country has been in decline since the 60s. First we lost the empire, then we lost our manufacturing industries, two things which paid for all those public services and pensions and whatnot that we had become accustomed to as a country.
Post financial crisis, we have had over a decade of austerity, public services have been cut to the bone, and then Brexit has come along to compound the problems.
A lot of people have decided the UK has run its course and it should be euthanized. Then Scotland can be reborn as an independent country. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

  7. I wonder if all major economies in the West feel the same – my French, Us, Italian and German colleagues have similar views.

  8. Well we’ve got nearly 14 million idiots to thank for voting in the Tories again in 2019.

    Maybe they are the 1/3?

  9. Thats because we keep electing a government that is actively ruining the country to line their pockets and those of their mates/donors.

We’ve also let the media dictate who governs us.

And we’ve let racists to be more vocal.

  10. YouGov can say all they want, but I prefer to listen to my fellow Reddit users on r/UK who consistently and wisely remind those who agree with the title opinion that they’re merely a trivial minority in an Online Echo Chamber™

  11. We’re in the worst state we have ever been in. And things are going to get worse. Starmer will win the next GE and won’t fix anything. Sentiment will stay the same and as long as they can suppress any opposition which at this rate will be the lib dems, who aren’t to be trusted either. If I could I would move.

  12. What’s pisses me off about the whole royalty/brexit/political landscape over the last few years is that the rich have manipulated media and discourse to turn us against eachother. We should all be proud of being British. You don’t need to be a royalist or have any political alignment to be proud of where you’re from or where you live. Whether you’re a young British Muslim, a lgbtq person with parents or grandparents from the “West Indies”, a middle aged “white” man that was born in and spent their life in the uk, a recent immigrant from Eastern Europe looking to start a good life for your family, whatever your are. We should all realise that we are all the same. We need to put our differences aside and stop this infighting. We all need to learn acceptance and stop treating each other like they’re the enemy. When it comes down to it, we are all good people who are worried about the future for our families and we need to have solidarity. Don’t let them continue to turn us against eachother with the discourse they spread through media. We are all one. We are all different but we are all right here living in the UK, and we need to live together, to fight together for a better future

  13. Pride? Why should we feel pride in a country?

I’ve lived 1/2 my life here, I like the people I meet every day, the countryside is stunning, history is fascinating, politics and the media are dreadful. Generally, I love living here. Its one of the nicest parts of the world to live. Pride though, one of the seven deadly sins, why feel proud?

  14. This is what happens though when we all bitch and moan and do nothing about it, we’re all guilty of it, we reap what we sow

  15. A hell of a lot of people I know who are uni students or just this age bracket are pretty much set on moving abroad in the future. Nobody is satisfied.

  16. I’d love to know how anyone can be ‘proud’ of being born in this country or that country.

I’m ‘proud’ of my degree. I’m ‘proud’ of my career. I had a direct say in those though.

How can you be ‘proud’ because fate rolled the dice and you happened to be born in a certain country through no effort of your own?
