Hello friends, I’m going to join an Erasmus programme in Ljubljana next year. I also want to visit other countries during this time. I did some research about means to travel, but I have some specific questions.

Ryanair – Apparently Ryanair doesn’t operate in Slovenia. What do Slovenians do if they want to use Ryanair? Do you travel to nearby cities like Zagreb and Trieste in order to fly from there (to Germany, Scandinavia etc)? Are there any other cheap international options from Ljubljana? Most times I’m gonna have a backpack so I don’t need additional luggage

Flixbus – Do Slovenians often use Flixbus? I also found this website. [https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/en/international-travel/](https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/en/international-travel/)

Prevoz – Is this used mainly for travels within Slovenia? I guess I need to use Google translate to use the website, but are people open to accept foreigners too? I’m a woman btw.

BlaBlaCar – I used this often in my country. Is it common in Slovenia? Especially to nearby cities like Venice.

Trains – Is traveling to other countries from Ljubljana common? I also found this website [https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/tips-and-tricks/trains-europe/trains-country/trains-slovenia](https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/tips-and-tricks/trains-europe/trains-country/trains-slovenia)

Thank you very much. Your answers will help me arrange my budget for traveling.

  1. you dont really need planes to get to neighboring countries since everything is so close

i’ve heard of flixbus but not sure if it operates here or not, havent heard of prevoz (tho this is just the slovene word for “a ride/lift to somewhere”), havent heard of blablacar

you can get anywhere in slovenia from ljubljana by train in the span of ~2h (more for the northeast due to a rail line being upgraded)

you can get to zagreb, vienna, trieste, venice by train easily but takes a bit

  2. you have some good rynair connections from vienna or venecia and from slovenia you can fly from trst🙃.

i dont think slovenians use blabla car but prevozi.org are a good substitute and the app doesnt take amy fee.

trains can be fine but usually not the cheapest or fastest option.

flixbus also operates from slovenia and can be quite cheap if you book early

another option is hitchhiking wich is also a great option

  3. For trips in the region, go check Goopti, a car transfer service. Especialy for airport transfers to Zagreb and Venice this is useful. Flixbus is best for entering Italy as the rail options come to a complete standstill near the Italian border. The EC is your best bet to get to Salzburg/Munich or to Graz/Vienna.

  4. Closest airports for Ryanair are Zagreb (1.5hr car ride from Ljubljana) and Venice (2.5hr). Not sure how good connections are to there with public transport.

As mentioned above, neighboring countries are quite close, so you might want to check flixbus and prevoz.org, there you might be able to find shared car rides to some cities outside Slovenia.
