I’m not from Scotland, nor am I police officer, but as a man with a bit of a beard going on I feel pretty annoyed on behalf of those guys.
I know it sounds daft but having facial hair is kind of part of who you are. I’d hate to be in their situation.
Robert Peel gave the express order that Constables ~should~ be bearded to ensure they could be distinguished from soldiers, thereby making it clear that the public were policed by consent and not by martial force. Your beard fact for today.
What about Sikhs?
If they get exempted because they have a strong desire to have a beard, so should anyone else who has a strong desire to have a beard.
If they’re not exempted, carry on…
( I don’t have anything against Sikhs ; I’m just trying to undermine this policy, and that’s the fastest way I could think of)
Thats when I would pull my Muslim card even though I am not really religious.
Assuming certain religions will be void from this , which would just mean not all are treated equal.
>There will be exemptions for religious, cultural, disability or medical reasons.
Who decides what a ‘cultural reason’ is? Police have had beards since their formation, surely thats part of their culture?
I’ve had a beard for over 30 years, I’d argue it is part of my culture, I’d be pretty pissed off if someone’s belief in fairies meant they could have a beard but my belief in science meant I couldn’t.

For those who’ve only read the headline it’s about the fit of FFP3 masks.

Because the biggest problem with policing is facial hair. 🤦♂️
If they managed to work through the pandemic with a mask and beard on a daily basis, why introduce this stupidity now? Other countries manage, with fine looking men and their face fuzz.
This is a completely pointless rule change that will only further squash the morale of people who are already doing one of the hardest, most thankless jobs there is.
Cynic in me would say that someone got hold on some FFP3 masks and needs to flog it, perhaps using friends in the police.
Given that PPE scandals are not investigated…
This is a standard policy in any line of work where you have to wear a PPE respirator or mask. Shipyards, nuclear power plants, etc
‘He had one thing you didn’t got’
‘And what’s that sir?’
‘A GREAT BIG BUSHY BEARD’
Bearded or not you’ll never see a copper anyway.
Doesn’t matter.
If there is an alternative breathing apparatus they offer to the people who have beards for their beliefs, they should offer that to officers to who choose to have a beard. You choose what you believe as part of your identity, I choose to have a beard as it is part of my identity.
I’m not against religion, believe what you like, I don’t know why were all here or what its about so I’m not going to tell anyone else what to believe, but I don’t think its right to set religious rights above individuals rights. That would be whats happening if people who have chosen religion get to keep their beards while people who have chosen to have a beard for any other reason have to shave.
Religious reasons should be the reason for this, not the exception?! No?
Would the solution not be to ask officers to be prepared to shave their beard off if they need to wear PPE?
I would guess a bit of stubble is fine so 30 seconds with hair clippers would solve the problem at the time rather than this horrible rule.
I’d say the police have bigger fish to fry, but what do I know
Besides, gotta be careful, otherwise they might arrest me for hurting their feelings
A blanket ban on beards at all times is ridiculous.
In the unlikely event they need to wear a face mask then they can shave their beards at that point.
No problem with a well trimmed beard, but I draw the line at man buns.
Seems odd, and unnecessary, likely just because one senior officer prefers it that way.
This is ridiculous. As a balding man, facial hair takes the edge of for me. Luckily I would be excluded from this, but it’s bs. It’s like saying women cut there hair so it doesn’t go in food. The logical thing to do is adjust the equipment…
Having seen the way police dress these days, it points to a breakdown in leadership and discipline. It is about time they were made to dress and look professional.
Walking through the city centre last week I observed 4 officers at the Arndale.
One was dressed correctly, the rest seems to be wearing part uniform, part what what thought looked cool. Tattoos on display, one I think had a ‘thin blue line’ patch although I couldn’t be sure, and only 1 out of the 3 looked like a professional.
Not a problem though if cops want to play dress up and look cool, like in the movies, nothing bad ever came from that.
Well except in 2008 when the Manchester firearms unit liked to pretend they were in the movies and ended up shooting one of their own and getting the unit disbanded.
so criminals just need to all grow beards and anyone who refuses is a copper 🙂
“There will be exemptions for religious, cultural, disability or medical reasons. In these circumstances, **the force is seeking to introduce an alternative type of respiratory protection.”**
Well, why don’t they simply introduce the alternative type for all?

Edit: I support beards was supposed to be a hashtag. I’m leaving it like that simply because I like it.
There goes a tonna the population in the policing industey
It just seems so unfair. There are men who grow little facial hair, so it won’t affect them, but for men who grow thick beards, it’s constant shaving, which causes skin irritation and more chance of a skin infection and trapped hairs.
If I need help from police one day, I’m not going to care whether they have a beard or not ffs.
Why was it fine before covid to wear these masks with beards to chemical accidents etc, but not it isn’t. This is just a silly policy that has arisen from the pandemic.
>During the Covid pandemic police officers were fitted with specialist masks designed to protect them from the virus.
‘were fitted’? Sounds a bit ominous to me…
Against this 100%. A beard is natural and does not stop them from doing their jobs. It’s like saying you need to be bald to be a fireman in case your hair catches fire. Seems like just another ploy of control to what we can and can’t do.
All the issues with the police force and they decide that facial hair is the biggest
I’d rather have a bearded good cop than a clean shaven bad cop…
There’s a cunt stubble joke in here and I’m too chickenshit to make it.
>The exception to this policy covers officers and staff who cannot shave for religious, cultural, disability or medical reasons.
It’s just mad how magical beings in books actually have political clout in 2023.
Excellent.
Can they also order all the police officers within every force including the Met to polish their shoes & clean their police vehicles at least twice a week, keep their social media accounts private at all times and not publish or DM any more foul comments/threats/jokes/d*** pics/explicit videos.
