I know some poeple who store hobby equipment they use only several times a year, but they’re others who it is basically a facility for hoarding. I’m curious what do poeple use them for?

    Myself, I have used one to store furniture when I was between houses.

  14. Collectibles (boxes, old comic books, barbies and such), old clothes with sentimental value, decorations, stuff for when we actually own a house. Just generally stuff we want to keep, but don’t have the space for or use very often.

  16. When I moved back into my folks to save for a mortgage I put my life in there basically.

    €250 a month :/

    Ended up using it for 2 years. That’s €5K gone.

  17. There used to be an airsoft shop in one in Dublin, I think it was off the Navan road.

    I have to say, I really enjoyed the weird shady John Wick weapons dealer feel of knowing your way there and walking down the big hallway to nowhere to the secret fully stocked and staffed armory of fake guns waiting for you.

  21. Storage units are crazy expensive for the space. You get. I used one while moving house because the new house was delayed by nearly a year due to covid and we already ordered furniture. It was an expense that we really felt every month.

  22. They always remind me of that scene from Silence of the Lambs. Except at that time in Ireland I (along with the rest of the country no doubt) had no concept of what a storage facility was!

  24. Worked in one of these places for two years, customers vary from horders to sad eviction cases where they bleed money for months or years instead of selling or throwing away a bed and a few boxes of junk, honestly a depressing business to be in

  29. I dont have one but i was dating a girl a couble years ago who lived with her parents. She convinced her dad to get a storage unit for “all of her stuff” but she actually just set up smash pad so we could do it in privacy.

    So yes. Her dad paid so i could achieve private orgasm.

  30. I was looking to take one of these storages to keep bicycles and some memorabilia from trips, things that have 0 value for the world – but – they do have value for me. Call it hoarding if you like – I honestly don’t understand people living to have absolutely nothing.

    Anyways, gave up because prices in Dublin are just not worth it.

    But – what I wanted to say – Chinese colleagues told me – they found a “life hack” :d It cost them round 50 Euros to ship a pallet of stuff to China, and some “slow non express service” takes 2-3 months to get there. Stays in container, travels round the globe on a ship. Then that get’s unloaded in China and same day loaded back for Dublin, for 50 Euros again. So 100 bucks for 4-6 months. Apparently, when they are moving houses – Chinese use “ship to China and back” storage, as it’s way cheaper than local rip-of.
