I decided to write a letter to my sister and the daughter being raised [possibly refers to the daughter being adopted].
First, I shall inform that I am healthy, so I send best wishes to you too. I wish you good health and I bless you, for it is the beginning of the year, so may this year be happy and joyous. Now I shall thank you for the letter and gifts, and I say thank you, I have received them. I got the first dollar before Christmas as well as the message from my sister.
I went back home for the Christmas, for ten days, for the holidays. We spent the holidays so happily, there is nothing like it.
Now I keep on living in Kaunas, I‘ll probably be here until the month of June, until midsummer. We shall finish our training, and then return to our troops. After the exams we shall return as lieutenant colonels, as seargeants, but for now, it‘s hard, you have to learn a lot, how on earth can you learn everything…
However that’s nothing, as long as we are healthy and as long as we return home. Everything is the same as it was, I know nothing more. Here, ever since the autumn, there have been no cold or snow and the weather is the same as [when I was in] First defensive troops, and so on…
Now even I am not very healthy, one whole toe hurts very badly. Now I am in the hospital, I am discharged from the actvities. It‘s been two weeks, and it hurts really badly. The legs are turning swollen, I am afraid, lest they have to cut it off.
Other than that, I am healthy. I am waiting for when we finish our service. Now the service is only two years. For Artillery and Infantry, it is a year and a half.
I don‘t know anything else new.
Farewell.
May you be healthy with my visit [greetings?]. I shall be healthy too.
