That’s an amazing accolade for Rachael, well done to her. Being honest, on a sporting level I don’t think her achievements come close to what Novak Djokovic has done this year. However, you also have to consider the wider impact of her success. It will certainly have inspired more girls to participate in sport, as well as promoting the campaign for gender equality. The fact that the winner was decided by a public vote probably helped her cause too, given she’s quite ‘local’ (please don’t take offence, I’m NOT saying she’s British) compared to the others on the list.
On a related note, I think it’s a disgrace that neither Kellie Harrington nor Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won anything at the RTE Sports awards last night.
