BREAKING NEWS: MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE COUNTRY FOLLOW THE LAW TODAY
This assumes coverage is good
The general response is ‘wot a twat’
But the coverage is largely one of dumbfoundedness and belittlement. They’re portrayed as clowns.
Jihadis get plenty of media coverage when they drive a truck into a crowded market. It sure ain’t helping their cause though.
And no one talks about the climate they just argue about if they think the protestor was a twat or a hero….
Not all publicity is good publicity though. A person making a fool of themselves on national television gets lots of _negative_ attention.
Someone tried to plastic cuff themselves to a goal last week in the football. Idiots. Great way to ruin any career by doing stunts like that, oh wait – that’s assuming they have or aspire to have one
That coverage is on what massive twats they are, not on what we should do about climate change though. That’s not productive at helping with climate change.
There hired by the oil industry. Its so we talk about how dumb these protesters are and now how fucked these corrupt corporations are.
They don’t know how to protest because they’re middle class. They have everything to lose, which is ironic because they’re protesting for exactly that.
They do love a circus and what circus is complete without a clown
No form of climate protest will ever be accepted by the media. Unless it is entirely populated by perfectly behaved individuals that causes no disruption then they’ll be able to find some negative angle to it. If this perfect protest is somehow manged, then it will just be ignored.
It’s been the same with all major protest movements that challenge the status quo. MLK is the poster boy for effective peaceful protest. However he was portrayed as violent in his day and had more oppose than support him in polls right before his assassination. There was just a post about the Kent State massacre in the US, where students protesting the Vietnam war were gunned down by national guard, some were not even protesting, just walking by. There was a poll right after and more people supported the national guard than the students.
I wonder what a similar poll in the UK would have been like just after Bloody Sunday?
What’s the distinction being made in this article between these protests and peaceful protests?
The public is already on side for the climate debate issue. Perhaps they aren’t willing to sacrifice as much as other people are in its name, perhaps they have a more nuanced view that places the UKs damage in context to say China or the USA’s, perhaps they don’t believe in the catastrophization as much.
Marching or criminal behaviour isn’t really going to change any of that.
The fact is, protesters are not content that they have people on side, they want believe to believe in their cause in the same way they do. And no doubt if they did, those protesters would believe it even more strongly.
That’s why Just Stop Oil are doing what they’re doing, because to them negative publicity is better than no publicity.
Assuming my social media views actually make a fucking difference.
