Grand Parade, Cork this morning, Uber?

  1. Yes, Uber, but not like Ubers in other countries (eg. UK) . Uber can only platform registered taxis, not private hires, due to Irish laws regarding ‘taxi’ services.

This prevents them having a fleet of undercompensated private-hire contractors and undercutting regular taxis and means the cost of the journey must follow mandatory taxi pricing.

Uber cannot do their regular business model and are basically no different from FreeNow or any other taxi service app.

  2. I use Uber all the time. Most people don’t seem to know its a thing here and will just use Free Now. Usually means I’ve a better chance of getting a taxi.

Asked a driver once which of the apps he preferred to use and he said uber, they charge less fees than the others.

  3. I used uber all the time in Australia until recently, now that they’ve pretty much cornered the market the prices have increased and it’s now about the same cost of a taxi. All the whilenpaying the drivers shitter than they used to. Guess that’s the business model.

Taxis are fuckers here now though (Melbourne) if you live close to the city they will refused to do it on the meter and try charge you 3 times what you should pay to get home. Apparently that’s legal now because of a deal the taxi drivers union did with the government when they allowed uber.
