bear population in europe

  1. Wonderful that at least their territory in Scandinavia is so large. Those small pockets of territory in SW Europe seems precarious though. Bears have been extinct in the UK for over a 1000 years but surprised that bears seem to be extinct in Germany too.

  2. A bit off topic, but I thought I should share an idiom connected to this,

we have a saying in Croatian “zaštičen kao lički medvjed” (trans. as protected as Lika bear) which is used for polititians mostly and means someone is “above law”, untochable and no one can do anything about it.

Lika bear is a brown bear that inhabits the area in Croatia marked on the picture.

  3. All that Gray in Slovakia could easily be light green at least…. It’s not uncommon to see them (well I am not there anymore but my family keeps telling be about them).

As far as the mountains and forests go, they will be there.

  4. Romania has the most brown bears, around 6000, 60% of Europe brown bears, I live under the carpathian mountains, and some of them even entered cities, 3 years ago a man was killed by a bear in a neighbouring village while he was near the forest, his face was ripped off, especially female with cubs they are extremely dangerous, you need a gun to stop them, and Romania has the lowest gun ownership rate on the entire European continent. And there are unique traditions here in my region, unique in Romania and the world, where people the day before the new year dress with real bears costumes and go on [parades](https://youtu.be/sx6OfchxmoI).

  5. BS with Slovakia. There are literally hundreds, or even more than 1000 of bears in most of the country. I don’t understand what is unclear there.

  6. Ehm Slovakia status uncertain is like ,,yes there is much but no one exactly know how much”.

Every hunter says that the bears are particularly numerous especialy in certain locations in centre of Slovakia, but the Ministry of the Environment forbids shooting if you don’t defend yourself.
