Well that’s common sense, too many idiots suing for something they didn’t create and can not own.
Should have just played the jury the 4 chord song by axis of awesome lol
The 2015 jury decision in Pharrell Williams v. Bridgeport Music lowered the bar for copyright infringement in the United States that any resemblance between a new song and a well know song in the past could give rise to a claim. This opened the door to the inheritors of copyright estates to raise ridiculous claims like this.
“Sounds a bit like” does not equate to copyright infringement.
I’m glad he won, unlike Robin Thick and Farell Williams who were ripped off with their music that just wasn’t a match to Marvin Gaye on paper
Ah fuck, that means he’s going to keep making music. We were so close…
One of my fave TV shows made an art of songs that reminded you of artists but didn’t completely rip them off. Oh, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – we will never see your like again
Damn it! I wanted him to quit music.
But yeah common sense decisions really.
Good, not a fan of him at all but this was the right outcome.
As much as I see his point about not being able to copyright chords, it does say something about how generic his music must be, if so many people sue him for plagiarism
I mean, good.
Anyone that plays an instrument where chords are a big part of things or just knows enough about music theory understands that certain chord progressions have been repeated for hundreds of years because they just make sense musically.
Can you imagine if for example, U2 sued Maroon 5 for copying With or Without You when they released She Will Be Loved?
It would be a total piss take and whoever is in charge of Marvin Gaye’s legacy needs to fucking check themselves.
I don’t know much music theory, but I know enough to know that suing for a _fucking chord_ is like suing me for an if statement (I’m a programmer)
As much as I don’t like Ed’s music, fair play. If he’d lost, it would have set a ridiculous precedent for music in the future. Chords are subjective, it’s not always intentional ripping off.
Good news because the precedent of owning a chord progression is awful and beyond stupid.
Bad news because Ed is not quitting music.
Seem we broke even
How many times has he been sued for copyright now damn!
I’m not a fan but the mean spirited wishes for him to fail are baffling to me. Plus, had he lost it would have set a terrible precedent for other artists.
What’s even more upsetting is that Ed stated he missed being with his family in Ireland for his grandma’s funeral just to attend this trial. I don’t blame him for being pissed about this. If they had properly done their homework before suung, they wouldn’t need to waste everyone’s time.

Now, to throw in a random youtube vid titled ‘Play 26 SONGS with 4 CHORDS!!’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGeqjlPz4kw
