The Republic of Ireland Act provided for the abolition of the last functions of the King in relation to Ireland and provided that the President of Ireland would exercise these functions in the King’s place. When the Act came into force on 18 April 1949 it ended Ireland’s status as a British dominion

  1. Wasn’t that role filled by the governor general after 1923 and was completely ignored after the 1932 Eucharistic congress as in wasn’t filled in on what was happening not invited to government meeting etc

  2. I think it was it waa 38 constitution that erased all mention of the crown. The 48 act declares a republic and lets us leave the commonwealth. Maybe there were other non constitutional pieces of legislation?

  3. This is nonsense.

It’s a misreading of both the constitution, the republic of ireland act. The act didn’t really change anything, it just repeated a few things in the constitution for the slow learners.

Ireland was explicitly a republic from the moment the constitution passed in 1937 – ***”Ireland is a sovereign, independent, democratic state.”***

This idea also ignores that it just isn’t how Irish law works. An act of the oireachtas simply doesn’t have the power to do that. It would require constitutional change and a referendum

    Well, parts of it anyway.
