>The pizza giant said it could avoid rising labour costs by ‘outsourcing’ delivery work to customers
How is that going to work? If I have to leave the house I am not going to Dominos, the fact it gets delivered is the other reason I would even consider it.
I enjoy the language in these things.
“Outsourcing to customers” = we don’t want to provide the service anymore because the humans aren’t as cheap.
“More efficient” = instead we’re using free humans to do what we used to pay people to do. This is moving the costs off our books so now the costs don’t exist! (for us)
I have no problem if they choose to do this. It may work it may not depending on how many people really value the delivery aspect and just stop ordering instead. I just wish they wouldn’t use this weasel language to pretend it’s something it isn’t.
It’s just a complete non-story of a business making a decision to focus on the most cost effective way to sell it’s product.
It has always offered some deals for collection only and is likely just increasing them.
As long as delivery drivers working there get paid it’s fine. Maybe they need less delivery drivers but that’s no different to any business hiring for demand.
Market reacts to changes
So be it, you save in labour, I save in Domino’s costs
In 2022 Dominoes spent 33m in advertising in the US. Their gross profit was 1.6b (edit for billion).
If they have been hit during the cost of living crisis it’s because people have realised that they are grossly overcharging for their product.
Maybe their losing money because less people are willing to pay 20 quid for shit pizza.
Those Chicago Town stuff crusts are amazing for 4 quid.
Any business or company trying to screw its employees over for the sake of profit margins should not be in business.
And yes, while we’re on the subject, I also feel that businesses cheapskating with staff on Universal Credit should be billed by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and made to repay the shortfall of their slave wages. I also feel that anyone hiring people on Zero Hours Contracts should be jailed for wage theft. If you steal from someone’s house then you go to prison. It should be the exact same consequence if you steal from someone’s pay packet.
It’s a very simple principle – don’t hire staff you can’t afford as a business. This is part of the reason we have this so-called cost of living crisis. Our sweatshop economic theories aren’t working and the backbone of our society are the workers, the people who turn up for work day in, day out and get the work done.
This is not being left wing. This is economic reality. If your employees have to visit a food bank to get by then very clearly you are the problem in our society.
“We’re charging £22 for a £3 pizza, how can we pay our drivers less too!”
Are they going to keep the prices, though? Because they can fuck right off, if so.
It used to be the case you could get Domino’s (Papa John’s, Pizza Hut etc.) at half the price, if not less, if you actually bothered to pick it up. Pizza is a low cost (as in, cheap to make), high margin item, so you’d really pay through the nose for being lazy and the convenience of having it delivered to your door – and you’d be able to benefit from the low cost of the item by making the trip to the place yourself, if one was nearby (I’ve done it a few times).
If they plan on selling me a £25 pizza that I have to pick it up myself… Yeah, that ain’t happening, and I feel like they’ll lose a lot of custom especially in the current, economic climate.
Tbh, I only collect. Our collection only deals bring the pizzas down to under a tenner; and that’s the most I’d ever pay for one.
So rather than giving what would be a measly pay rise in the grand scheme of things, they are just gonna go ahead and lose customers so they dont have to pay people a decent wage lol
We only order because of the delivery convenience, seriously for 4 of us, £80 without discount, they are taking the piss.
If the Pizza’s were £10, fair enough, but they aren’t…
They already started charging for delivery last year when it was free until then. The markup on pizza is insane. Where is all their money going? I order from them a few times a year but charging delivery was a step too far for me. Now I’ll never use them 🤷♂️
Let’s be honest the best thing about dominoes is that garlic dip
I don’t know why people buy it anyway… It’s shit.
Dominoes is over priced to shit in the UK. In aus you could get a normal sized pizza when ever for 6 quid.
The only reason I order a Domino’s is because I’m fucking hanging out my arse and I want it delivered. I’d rather go to my fave local anyway, he’s a lovely Italian bloke, his prices are cheap and his pizza dough is *amazing*. He just doesn’t deliver but that could be why his prices are cheap? Whereas if Dominos stops delivery they will never put their prices down….
I don’t understand why someone would want to spend £20 on a chemical waste pizza. It tastes like shit and you feel like you’ve been hit with gulf war syndrome afterward.
Bro they charge £20 for a margherita AND started charging £2.50 deliver recently. How much more fucking money do they need
This is the kind of Galaxy brain stuff you can come up with while you’re waiting for tens of millions of pounds of stock options to vest and hired McKinsey.
I reckon they’re on the verge of going bust tbh.
They’ve overinflated the cost of their pizzas for decades now, all of a sudden they’ve slashed the prices by like 50% across the country (I assume to try and generate a lot of revenue, quickly).
Now with this as well, it seems like damage control for a company that is in bad shape.
The *only* reason I order a Domino’s is that I can’t / can’t be bothered to leave the house. As soon as I’m in the car then I can go pretty much anywhere and that’s not to Domino’s.
Domino’s will not survive this. We only go there because they deliver and the prices are extortionate for what you get. If I have to go out to collect, there are 20 other places I’d pick before them.
Their making plenty the greedy sods. These are the guys who gave me gens such as “you need to make your staff afraid you”, “your stuffed crusts are really popular, double the price please” and “if you work hard and put the hours in you could make a thousand pounds a month”. I dont harbour resentment about much in life but if there was its them 😅
Dominos is shit. Supermarket pizzas with some Basil, olive oil and mozzarella are far better and much much cheaper.
It’s overpriced shit anyway.
It’s a fucking pizza. 1 shitty pizza with low quality ingredients for the price of a week’s worth of grocery shopping.
They can fuck off.
I’d rejoice inside a great deal if Domino’s went bust. Don’t see how that is ever possible however at £900 for a slice of bread and cheese.
There isn’t much on the face of this planet that is a greater rip off than a Domino’s pizza.
