I wish I could have read these forums and be more vigilant before but what’s gone is gone. My carry-on bag, which I moved to the overhead compartment to make space for new passengers who came in near Rotterdam and Schiphol stations, was also stolen. My friend and I had no clue that the thief swapped it with another bag full of trashes! Such a terrible feeling after realizing my bag is not there anymore when I arrived in Amsterdam Central Station! Be extra careful!

In Western Europe, that’s just common on all public transport around big cities.
Yeah, also pay extra attention if you travel through the 3 brussels stations: North, Central and Midi. Because the stations are so close together it’s very easy for thieves to get on in one station, scope out the biggest opportunities and then grab and run at the next station.
My backpack goes on my lap, every time, no exceptions.
I never ever put something on the overhead compartment. I’d rather stand upright for an hour holding my luggages near me when trains are too full to occupy a seat, than leave my belongings for anyone to snatch.
I think it’s about time we all just started carrying round suitcases full of poo.
Beware of thieves anywhere in the world in public transport/places. Especially when you are clearly a tourist.
