“If we pass this bill, there’ll be no landlords left in Ireland. Don’t threaten us with a good time” (Paul Murphy)

  1. Paul Murphy can come out with whatever nonsense soundbites he feels like, because he and the rest of PBP have no interest in ever being in government.

  2. Fuck all those students in rural areas or urban areas without a college. Stay the fuck at home with your 4 hour commutes to college every day. Or else just buy a house.

  3. I think shit like this is what fucks over the left. What we need is plenty of available accommodation to help lower prices and improve standards because you won’t feel as stuck with your current landlord. It may not be a long term solution but for the time being landlords are necessary and do provide a service despite many being awful.

  4. This sounds really dumb, but I’m assuming he isn’t talking about small landlords who own a couple extra properties as an investment, but rather the big corporate ones who own hundreds??

I am not a landlord, so people can correct me if I’m wrong on this (*I was told it by a landlord*): Individual landlords who own a property themselves have to pay tax on the rent they collect as part of their income. However, a corporation doesn’t have to pay anywhere close to the same amount of tax on the rent they collect. This means we’re actually incentivising rentals to be owned by large corporations instead of individuals.

Also, you can’t increase rent by over 4% each year, but if it is vacant for 2 years you can increase it to whatever price you want. So a lot of these corporate landlords are deliberately keeping properties empty for 2 years each, so that they can dramatically increase the price and make more profit in the long term.

  5. If there’s no landlords how do people rent?

You need 10% minimum to buy and that’s if you have a good salary to make up for he balance. How many people starting their first job, living away from home have that. I’d say very few.

  6. Jaysus a load of people here thinking he wants less places available for rent 🙈 he clearly says he wants to get rid of the big private landlord companies and build more public housing in the rest of the video

As someone who has had terrible experiences with landlords, yes don’t threaten me with a good time of renting from a public housing body!

  7. There was no problem with landlords in Ireland from 1970-2020 when we had the supply. Now that we have short supply its all the landlords fault.

Get building and the market will regulate itself.

Evidence to support my theory? literally every other country in the western world. USA, Canada, UK etc. and Ireland 10yrs ago.

  8. Yeah, as shite as it sounds, we need some landlords to rent properties. i go to college away from my parents’ house where the feck would i live without Johnny renting me a room

  9. Agree with him so long as his plan is target big landlords and not the small ones, while also ensuring that the government pushes towards a much more hands in social housing policy

  10. His house has been in the news this week for all the wrong reasons, dickheads protesting outside of it

But musing aloud – does mr. Murphy own his own house?

If so I’m happy for him, but he survives on an average industrial wage as per PBP policy right?

I just bought my own house with my partner, we don’t live in the capital, we don’t earn much more than the average industrial wage, and it was a major fucking struggle, one which we couldn’t have done without renting

We met some shkyboy landlords in our time but only for landlords as a whole we would have been on the street

  11. In my experience smaller landlords are far worse than big corporate landlords. A small private landlord is far more likely to tell you to f*** off if you need something fixed. I had a leak in my old flat for months before they finally fixed it after me complaining several times and getting really sick. With my current landlord who is a big company if there is an issue they have a guy on payroll whos job it is to go around and fix stuff for all their houses. Far better quality housing too since it is a new build, unlike my last place which was barely habitable.

  12. I get that he wants public housing.
But if he thinks it’s something that could pop up in time to take the place of landlords. Naivety of populism I guess.

  13. We should just pass emergency legislation and confiscate all absentee and corporate landlord property. Fuck em they’ve profited enough already from causing misery in this country
