My partner found a rent ad in one of thousands “to rent” Facebook groups she’s following. The ad seemed perfectly legit: shitty photos of what looked like a decent flat, good position, extremely high price. She contacted the person who published the ad (let’s call him the owner, it’s just easier) and got ghosted as it’s a good norm when you’re looking for a place.

When finally the owner contacted my partner back, he gave her some additional details and asked what kind of contract we were interested in. He didn’t reply to our request to visit the apartment, but that’s still business as usual.

My partner asked again to visit the apartment and this time the owner replied:

* That he doesn’t live in Belgium so he’s looking for someone he can trust to rent his apartment
* That he’d like to rent the apartment through [Booking.com](https://Booking.com), which has a service for long-term renting
* That he would be able to send us a video of the apartment
* That he would send us the link to booking once we made up our mind

Of course, we closed the conversation there and we laughed about it. Later I checked a bit and discovered this is not a new type of scam, as it’s similarly described in [other subs](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/10k3blw/long_term_rental_via_bookingcom_am_i_being_scammed/). What I find weird is that this didn’t happen for a place in Brussels, but in a smaller town.

Now, I’m telling this as I’d like to prevent others from being scammed. Would you also report it someway?

Edit: I just realised that by “mad price” most people understand very low. That would have been an easy spottable red flag. The price was crazy high as it’s usual in the immo market nowadays.

  1. You could try to fill in [https://meldpunt.belgie.be/meldpunt](https://meldpunt.belgie.be/meldpunt). It does seem to be, at first at least, for making a report AFTER having been scammed, but maybe you can just fill it in as if, and see where it leads.

Anyway, since the scammer is probably in antoher country, it’s more than likely nothing can be done. If you see the ad again on Facebook, you can just report it there, there has to be a button.

  2. >That he doesn’t live in Belgium

This should be a major red flag for anyone conducting these types of transactions, whether it be a car, or anything really. If people are not willing to show up I just move on
