Local elections 2023: Polls to open across England

  1. Well it’s not much of an election if the polls aren’t going to open, is it?

More seriously, it’ll be interesting to see how badly the Tories do. If they don’t do as badly as is possible then I think we’ll see a jump in their overall poll numbers and probably a general election in the autumn.

  2. The Tories won’t do as badly as feared because millions who’d vote against them now can’t because of Voter ID requirements.

  3. Voted.

Funny to note that more MPs have been convicted of criminal offences than people convicted for voter fraud/irregularities in the general election that put them in parliament.

  4. I really hope people go out to vote, so many people in so many countries don’t have any say over their governments at all and we have some, all be it little.

  5. I did my postal vote a few weeks ago. My mum commented on the fact that it was weird there were 3 Labour and Lib Dem candidates in our area, but only 1 Tory. Apparently it’s because they couldn’t find more than 1 person to run for them. So I take that as a good sign.

  6. Just done my vote ,let me use my old out of date passport no problem.

So thats one for Lib Dems , and Two for Labour.

Like a dinghy i forgot too cross the greens.

  7. Have 3 choices. Conservatives, Lib Dems, Green Party.

There is basically no information online about our candidates and conservatives are the only one who put something through the door.

Kind of hard to vote with no idea who you’re voting for. Have no desire to vote conservative but the little Lib Dem info doesn’t inspire (NIMBYism about homes being built, same as Conservatives). Greens are basically ghosts regarding local political plans.

  8. Annoyingly the only person to knock on in the last few weeks was from the conservatives. If it wasn’t for a small flyer, that looked and read like it was written by my nan, that came through the letterbox a couple of days ago I would have no idea who the labour or independents candidates are. I’m surprised that other parties have not been more visible in my area

  9. Can’t find any real information about any of the 4 candidates in my area, other than their name and party.

Conservative has pretty much always won in this district, so they have a few posters around basically saying ‘vote for us and we’ll keep doing what we’re doing’, and none of the other parties have even bothered to campaign or advertise themselves in anyway.

  10. Did my civic duty nice and early this morning – It took the presiding officer five minutes of looking through the official handbook to make sure my ID was valid. Said ID was the **Voter Authority Certificate**

Turns out there are less than 100 people who can use this particular polling station and the usual turnout is less than 30.

Does anyone happen to know if there’s a list that shows all the polling stations and the number of people who are eligible to use each one? I’m wondering how many stations dotted around the station are open for less than 100 people.

  11. Voted earlier, for Lib Dem as it’s close between those and Tories here.

Never got a leaflet from any of the main parties, just one from an independent bloke who wanted brighter street lights as his number one policy.

  12. Voted, that’s another one for Labour. Coincidentally, Labour in Prittlewell is the only party to have a good manifesto as well as a chance to oust the Tories. Win, win.

  13. Voted a mix of Labour and independent. I’ve met the independent guy and he has quite a big presence in our area and has got a good track record in the council.

I’ve heard nothing from any of the big parties, but the conservative party member looks like Edward from The League of Gentlemen and votes like him too.

  14. I don’t have any photo id whatsoever, so I did the postal vote thing as they don’t require any photo id for that.

  15. I think anything more than 300 seats lost is bad for the Tories. 500-700 will be a right drubbing. Earlier predictions of 1,000+ were clearly non-credible.

  16. I live in a Tory area and the shit I hear about labour being the worst and Tories sorting out the mess is almost comical.

I looked Ibto it and the previous labour mayor was in a scandal.

It only takes one misjudgement to taint an entire area against its own interests

Man. I’m scared for the future of the UK

  17. Always amazes me that millions of people go out of their way to vote in local elections. They’re completely pointless because local government in this country is an absolute farce.

I’ll always turn up for a GE even if it’s to spoil the ballot, but for locals and PCC elections I don’t bother because the post I’m supposed to elect somebody to serves no actual purpose.

  18. Happy to report they accepted my disabled bus pass without issue! I was concerned they’d think there was an age limit on them. Evidently not 🙂

It helped I had a wakey seven-week-old they could coo over. My three-year-old was annoyed this morning that we were going to the polls without her – usually we go after we pick her up from nursery. We hype up voting to her as this cool dutiful thing.

  19. No voting in my ward this time.

But I’m feeling utterly despondent about the ability of the general public to bring about change.

Not only the voter ID thing, but the comments I’ve read online in my local FB page range from confusion about which areas are voting, people saying they can’t because they refuse to pay for ID (despite free ID being available for a while), to people saying there’s no point voting because the pot holes are so bad, to people suddenly asking who they should vote for…. on polling day.

People are obviously just fed up and apathetic, but they’re exactly the type of people who are being screwed over by our current party.

  20. Had a cat in my polling station this morning, so we asked him for photo ID. He meowed and left. Rude!

  21. Done and also amused/heartened that outside there was a dedicated dog sitter that people could leave their dog with while they voted.

  22. I’m hoping labour do a lil poorly to show them their current milquetoast neo-liberalism isn’t the way to go for the GE

  23. Wasn’t for me, the entirety of my local parish council have been appointed uncontested as the number of candidates competing for a seat on the council was less than the amount of seats available…

Still it’s the parish council so they pretty powerless in the grand scheme of things, unless you regard the theme of the village flower beds a particularly important issue. It’s basically a bunch of old farts cosplaying as a Tory majority government in a village hall function room.

  24. For the first time, I’ve decided not to vote. I’ve always voted previously, if only to spool the ballot. However, it seems unethical to vote for councillors when I will be leaving the area within 2 months.

  25. They tried asking for my poll card when I went to vote today… I asked why, as we don’t need them and the reaction wasn’t pleasant. Oh well, at least we got it done.

I noticed a lot more people turning up at that time of day than in previous votes. Three Labour and one Conservative on the ballot, fingers crossed.

  26. Voted. Decided to bring my most obscure form of permitted ID, which was a 15 year expired national identity card from an EEA country. Nobody batted an eyelid at it, and they accepted it suspiciously fast.

Makes me wonder how the hell the poor polling station people are expected to validate ID cards from 30 states, each of which has probably gone through 1 or 2 old formats when you allow for expired ones.

  27. Odd – apparently I voted earlier.

I’ve been at work all day. Even with voter ID they got my name and my Dad mixed up. Yes we live in the same house but are two different people with two different first names.

  28. I took my voting certificate to the polling station at 7pm, was told I was the first person all day to attend that polling station with one. The three clerks had not seen one in person till then. 12 hours and only one person used one !

Around 1500 people voted at this station for the previous council elections, I wonder what it will be this time. To clarify, i have a passport and driving license, but I wanted to try using one for the point of it.
