UK growth virtually stalled in October, even before Omicron | Economic growth (GDP)

  1. It will get far worse.

Under-investment in tertiary education, research and industry has fucked us up for decades… can’t think of one major UK internet company that has gone global and the ARM fiasco was a disgrace. Also the scheme they ran for Scientists with one Nobel saying that the UK was deeply unattractive and they’d be unlikely to attract a Noble in the next decade.

Working conditions and pay for Scientists and Engineers are appalling – case in point $200K USD for a mid-level engineer is usual in the US (and even then they have shortages), my ex-girlfriend just got a job for a US Energy company working remotely from the UK with AWS for $250K USD… a remote job! In the UK she’d have to go into the office for GBP 60K a year.

BJ quoting Deepmind is a fucking disgrace, this is Google and they could pull DM anywhere they like, simply intellectual capital.

AI, Cyber, Pharma, new technologies – we are so far behind we are truly fucked, and government investing billions to (unlikely) catch up? We all know the answer to that one.

Simple idea – use (Just!!) a few Billion to fund major AI/Cyber/Pharma MSc conversion courses allowing all to apply – indeed make them readily available with FULL funding (the Tories did have such a scheme 91/92 for IT/Manufacturing which at the time was totally fucking visionary) – heavily fund new Businesses in the area.. instead banks keep hold of money and say fuck you, no track record.

Pure short term greed has held us back and will snowball into the collapse of any likely decent future for the country.

  2. I definitely haven’t had enough coffee today. I missed the subtitle and suddenly imagined a bunch of teenagers not growing for 4 weeks…

  3. You mean tax rises, Brexit, inflation, uncertainty about basically everything, a huge deficit, energy supply volatility, labour, transport and fuel shortages and massive corruption could have an economic impact!? Who knew?!

  4. Well…duh!

This is what happens when you break ties with your largest trading partner.

This is by design, and was voted for by a smidgen over half of the voting public…twice.

Sadly, the half that didn’t vote for this will still have to live through it.
