Patrick Kielty a ‘done deal’ for Late Late Show presenter role after weeks of talks at RTÉ

  1. Was almost sure it would’ve been Claire Byrne.

Nothing against Patrick but it seems a safe and meh choice.

  2. Never even considered him for it, but could actually be a good choice. His stand up for funny enough if I can remember, and he’s plenty of hosting experience. Nice to see someone from outside the RTE bubble anyway.

  3. Didn’t expect that at all, haven’t really heard of him do anything for quite a while but he was quite in demand in the early to mid 2000s with Fame Academy and the original Love Island.

I think though with his previous background as a standup comedian though he could be well suited to the role actually, plus it will be nice to hear someone else in a prominent role on RTÉ who isn’t from South Dublin. Not that I’ll be watching it anyway but I’d imagine he’d be an upgrade on Tubridy.

  4. I saw Paddy do a guest speaker job at a gaa club in West London a few years ago. Real muldoon gaa stuff, the stage was a trailer pulled into the ground by a tractor. Anyway, I was ambivalent to him beforehand but funk me he was very funny. He will be great for that show

  5. I remember papers reporting the same thing when Gay retired. Kielty had a contract signed and was all set to replace him and host the show in September.

Nope, we got current affairs supremo Pat Kenny for a light entertainment show.

  6. If it wasn’t for the Toy show I would say the Late Late would have been cancelled, talk shows have become light entertainment, celebs joining to promote stuff. And the Late Late has in the past done a lot more than that. Also there does need to be an Irish chat show as otherwise in terms of marketing stuff Ireland just becomes a sub division of the UK in the eyes of media/celebs.

I like Kielty, I think he will do a decent job but also the Late Late needs to change. Mindset, guests, something. Tubridy looked so stilted and uncomfortable on the show, no ease, grace or humour.

  7. I just don’t see it, Patrick doesn’t seem the kind of guy that would be on the verge of smacking a child, the toy show isn’t going to be the same.

  8. I’d say he’ll gradually bring the show a lot more in the direction of Norton / US talk shows. Making it more than just people sitting on a couch. Maybe with some standup bits, entertainment clips. It’s a decent idea.

  9. Might actually make the thing worth watching.

Landed on it last Fri when sitting down to watch Succession and there was an Ed Sheeran special, not my thing but I’ve always admired his success so thought I’d watch it for a few mins. The few mins was enough, all that was going through my head was “Ryan, get yer head down outts Ed’s hole”, absolutely brutal interviewer.

  10. To be fair to Patrick Kielty he definitely did well to bag Cat Deeley there.

Man’s no stranger to being the underdog

  11. He was in the conversation before Kenny and Tubs took the job (although iirc it was a straight up choice between Tubs and Gerry Ryan that time).

He’ll be great for one aspect of the show but like every other possible candidate he won’t be able to do everything the show wants to do.

I’ve liked him since he had balaclava clad high kicking dancing paramilitaries on his BBC NI Chat show. It was the first time I’d seen people taking the piss out of the troubles to that extent on TV like that.

  12. I hope he can steer the show a bit away from the misery fest it became the last few years.

  13. Tubridy gets some awful hate, he had actually some good quips down through the years, especially when he was comfortable with a guest.

  14. He has two young kids, so would probably be good craic for the toy show as well.

I’ll admit he’s totally dropped off my radar, haven’t seen him do anything in like 20 years, but looking at Wiki he’s kept himself busy with presenting work, so he’s not out of practice.

Daily Mail says they’re living in England, he must be planning on flying in every Friday morning for this.

  15. He’d actually be a fairly decent host i think.

hes better known in the UK, his wife is very famous so he might have a bit more clout to bring on some big name guests (rather than trawl through the RTE canteen every week).

as for his interviewing skills….dunno, but can’t be any worse than Angela Scanlan, Miriam, Tommy Tiernan or the like.

  16. All part of a radical new Late Late show shakeup. First show line up:

    – Dermot Bannon
    – Pat Shortt
    – Mario Rosenstock
    – Jason Byrne

    With music from Mike Denver.

  17. Really think he could be a good choice. I find him funny and remember his talk show years ago he seemed good. He’s done the few documentaries on Northern Ireland so might be able to pull off the politics along with the entertainment side. Who knew there was someone in RTE who could think outside the box for someone who’s not already working for RTE.

  18. According to another article on her.ie

A source said RTE producers want a Graham Norton style show going forward🤯

“Producers want to take the show in a completely new direction and he was deemed the ideal fit for the role. If he wants it, it’s his.”

  19. An unadventurous entertainment has-been? His best years long behind him? Being promoted at RTE?

I am shocked, shocked I tell you.
