‘It’s not a good look.’ As cost of living crisis bites, some Brits are questioning spending money on glitzy coronation

  1. > When it first opened before the pandemic, the food bank was serving mostly homeless people. These days, many of those coming through the door are people working full time.

It’s bad enough that there are homeless peope who have to depent on charity. But in what world is it acceptable that people working full time have to visit the food bank?

Aren’t we all working a living? As in: shelter, food and some extra? How is working sensible when you can’t even satisfy the food part?

It’s sickening how people punch their chest because the UK avoided a recession while this is going on.

  2. The phrase ‘earn a living’ is just impossible for so many people.

You can earn sure, but you wont be able to live.

    Its a national humilation.

  3. I see zero fucking point, the generation that cares about the Monarchy is on the way out

This country is so ass backwards sometimes

  4. The thing about the coronation is what an own goal its becoming, I don’t know if he getting really bad advice or just not listening to good advice, but if he had said something like, ‘I want to represent this country in partnership with it, to that end I will be paying for half of all the coronation costs’ he would be well on his way to, if not being liked, then at least respected. Instead he is hoarding his money & spending ours.

    What a fool.

  5. The question of cost has been an issue ever since George IV nearly bankrupted the country for his coronation, even the Queens coronation raised questions especially as there was still rationing at the time and many londoners were still living in sub standard temporary accommodation after being bombed out . This issue is nothing new and I guess adjusted for inflation, at least on paper, every coronation has been less flamboyant than it’s predecessor however some people will always feel any cost to public finances for these events is inexcusable while others will see it from a completely different perspective.

  6. It’s bread and circuses. We don’t have bread (affordable food and energy), so we might as well have the circus of the coronation to distract us.

  7. Can’t afford the bread but here is the circus.

It was disrespectful to question the monarchy when the queen died but millions being spent on a man that is already king is just insane. There should be more push back on this.

  8. Brits should be spending 0 money on this nonsense. It’s utter tripe and just further goes to feed into the moronic brainlessness of worshipping the monarchy while dying in our cold homes due to not being able to afford to turn the radiators on or cook rice, which we also cannot afford to buy.

  9. Wasn’t there a recent story about protestors at a recent royal walkabout being threatened with a beating by others in the crowd? As much as I am bemused and appalled by the concept of Royalty in the modern age there does seem to be a significant number who will literally fight to retain it.

  10. Can’t believe we aren’t rioting. Sign up for the protest, get down there and kick up some shit like the French do. Time to stop paying for some old fuck to get a jewellery erection.

  11. While I completely agree its not a great look, does anyone actually believe not having a coronation/monarchy would make normal people any richer?

The fault is with the government.

  12. I would genuinally have mad respect for a more modern thinking monarch having a budget cornonation.

Only the absolute essential people needed. No big parade and crowd. Ram the essentials, family, guests etc into the required building. Do the big speach, film it and get it done. No need to plan a huge route that disrupts a whole day and costs a tonne of resources in terms of secruity.

Like I’m honestly not that fussed about the whole thing but it’s very rare the royals follow the same going ons as the rest of the country. The family (mostly) following quarantine rules was about the closest we’ve been to them in a while.

  13. But god choose these people to rule us!

Bank of England says we all need to accept being poorer

Practice your bowing and scraping to keep warm you serfs!

  14. Yeah but we know who’s at fault. They tell us it’s immigrants, they tell us its the EU, they tell us it’s the Crown…

It’s the banks. It’s the oil. It’s the Murdochs. It’s the corporations that have seen their best year ever several years in a row.

Destroying the country over scapegoat bullshit. The British special.

  15. Britain has money for what it wants to do. No shortage of money to send to Ukraine or host the Eurovision. But for helping normal people have a decent wage or supporting our nurses… nah nothing for that

  16. We’ve all been told to “get used to being poorer”. Two weeks later, we’re supposed to be joyously celebrating an incredibly rich man together with incredibly rich friends spending millions of pounds. “Poor for thee but not for me”

  17. The radio is awash with appeals for money for families in the UK who cannot afford food for their children. This is literally the worst I have ever known it.
