Its 0.30am and unfortunately I’ve been battling food moths in my kitchen for the last 6 hours. I had to throw away a lot of food (including my dinner). I found an old canned food in the cupboard, which I brought from Germany probably in 2021. If understand correctly the date is until 2024 and it’s safe to eat?

  1. No, it’s the date of prodution, not an expiration date. The food inside won’t exist until 2024

  2. Before eating open the can, smell it, if it doesn’t smell like a shit, old egg or sth like that you can taste it. If you have a dog or a cat – give them a try, if they eat, you can too. If they don’t , you shall not as well. In terms of cans – expiration also depends on storage conditions. If it was in a cool place it shall be fine.

  3. If you open it probably, I don’t think you can digest metal.

    But in all honestly smell it when opened, check if the lid is intact and not swollen or if the can is not dented or damaged

  4. Why do people still believe that expiration date means that food is unsafe to eat is beyond me. Especially canned food! I read a guy ate a 30 year old twinkie and all he said the flavor was gone.

  6. I read the BBE date as 29 aug (829) 2024 so it should be OK to eat. For safety smell the food when you open the can, and if at all possible ensure you heat the food above 75 degrees Celsius, that should kill off any remnant bacteria.

  12. No, even though metal is digestible by stomach acid, it can cause major injuries to your throat, not to mention heavy metal poisoning from all the copper that’s probably in there.

  17. Bro I ate meat in a can half year after expiration date and it was totally fine.
