I needs my Range Rover to navigate the treacherous routes of the south Dublin school run
It’s fine, they are only dangerous to other people.
A lot of what people class as SUV have smaller engines than standard saloons. We already tax based on emissions no?
Those dangers being emissions and pedestrian collisions.
The data used for deaths was from the US where vehicle related deaths are 11.1 per 100k vs 2.9 in Ireland. The article also mentions SUV’s are safer for the occupants of the SUV. Cites the last decade of SUV popularity trend, deaths in 2011: 186 vs 2021: 130.
People buy SUV’s for size and convenience, not power so it’s more the manufacturers issue to offer smaller engine SUVs to combat emissions.
What problem are we solving really by unincentivising suv’s vs improving public transport or city infrastructure to prioritise pedestrians or cyclists.
Stupid LED lights on them are never calibrated right blinding anyone not at the same height
I don’t see how they can ban them. All most of them would have to do is change the label they put on the car to avoid the ban.
SUVs started out as agricultural vehicles, the decent ones still are just with loads of added luxury. The rest are just jacked up wannabes. The only advantage they really have over a standard car is ground clearance and being easier to get in and out of because of that added height. They are no more SUVs than any other car.
I think the craze for buying agricultural vehicle knock offs will end at some point, it’s a fashion for the most part. As long as we have a sizable obese population having cars that are higher off the ground won’t go away completely.
At the end of the day SUV is a label for a car that does everything wrong. SUVs go against everything we have learned about how to make cars better over the past 100 years. Eventually people will have to cop onto the fact they are paying a premium for an agricultural vehicle that isn’t good at agriculturing and isn’t good in an urban environment either. Until that happens car makers won’t change.
Car manufacturers have moved away from making cars and are now making more suvs
and what are we calling a SUV are all the crossovers SUVs
we are not all driving around in ford f150s
If the government want to do this it is very simple reduce the VRT on smaller cars and they will become more popular
Driving around continental Europe, anectodally at least, it’s mostly small hatchbacks driving around. Urban and rural. It’s at least a much higher proportion. And they actually have proper distances to drive over there. Don’t understand the obsession with driving oversized cars here
Let’s not forget the size of pickups these days. The likes of the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux or Nissan Navara are massive. Are they really necessary?
It depends on the level of safety tech in the SUV or crossover. AEB tends to be a standard feature in most of them these days, you’d probably be safer stepping out in front of a 2022 Jeep Cherokee than a 2017 Fiat 500 as a result.
I’m living in the US now, where we have running gun battles in the streets and monster trucks. It’s real nice to look back at ireland and see people concerned about less egregious hazards. (I’m not trying to diminish it or be insincere, it’s just nice to see concern about issues that are less insane)
All the stats in that article are from American studies…
American SUV ≠ Irish “SUV”
(the vast majority of them anyway, most Irish “SUV’s” are crossovers the size of a hatchback or saloon, not a Ford F150 or Explorer)
Ban.
I drive a kia sportage which has a 1.7 litre diesel engine, I used to drive a vw golf 2 litre diesel….. but according to this thread the sportage is a gas guzzler???
Start a conversation? jesus this topic is as tired and worn out as the wheels on my fiesta…
I wouldn’t mind a chat about the dangers of BMW’s not indicating. I mean it happens so often it’s a running joke with people now but no one is ever going to do anything about it.
Also wouldn’t mind an investigation into why so many people crash or breakdown on the M50 everyday between 7-9 in the morning and 5-7 in the evening.
they should just put a garda and a tow truck at every entrance to the M50 for a while to get people to stop acting the fool.
This is just another American debate leaking into Irish politics.
They’re debating over downsizing their SUVs over there. They drive Cadillac Escalades and Ford Expeditions, those things are beasts and no, you can’t see over the bonnet. A Scania would be safer.
We don’t have them here. Hyundai Tucsons and Kia Sportages are not a danger to the road. The only SUVs that could vaguely be considered dangerous are BMW X7s and Range Rovers, and how many of those do you see?
This is a very important conversation and I am glad that it is being discussed!
So true! My neighbour Dave was eaten by an SUV the other day! Won’t catch me! I paraglide to work! Check mate SUVs! #turningpointSUV
We need to start the conversation about the amount of CO2 your EV has created in it’s construction.
Are ww talking about actual SUV or are we having a panic attack over SUV styled cars like a Juke
if you dont live in the schticks, i dont think there is a need for SUVs style vehicles in an overally populated cities.
They would be the same people that complain about congestions
How about a city center congestion charge based on the weight of your car?
I once saw a gobshite driving one on the motorway , swerving slightly . And I thought , that’s not the wind. Got up Along side it and I clocked the dickhead on his mobile , I gestured over to him “get off your #%@ phone” and he gave me such a look.. yes how inconsiderate of me I was in the wrong 😑
Filthy Hoares.
9/10 when I see a shit parking job, it’s a jeep / SUV / people carrier. I saw someone say in a previous thread they should be their own license class, and I’d be all for it
But how will I show I’m better than you all without my big car to prove it.
The term SUV is too vague a term, arent trucks in an acciden jast as dangerous as a SUV, and there is quite a difference between a 2 metric ton Range rover and a 1 ton honda crv. I understand if you live in the hinterlands and need to drive down 1 lane country roads needing something with more ground clearance.
Just banning SUV’s is untenable, they need to create width , weight and bumper height limits on vehicles and register trucks as commercial vehicles and require additional licensing.
I’m quite tall, I’ve a bad back. I can’t comfortably get into a standard sized car. Then there’s having to bend down to strap in kids etc. That’s the only reason I have a RAV4. I’d love to fit all into a smaller car but it ain’t possible
Recently my uncle was knocked off his bike in Wexford town by someone in an SUV. They didnt stop either.
What are we talking about in terms of the definition of SUV here, VW Tiguan / Renault captur or the bigger models?
I never understood why school runs and groceries required something bigger than a toyota aygo
Canadian here. Can confirm y’all are going to want to stop the pick up truck/SUV scourge before it starts.
In the top 10 most crashed cars list, there is not one that is remotely close to an SUV.
Anyone driving an SUV and raging about the ‘high tide height’ doesn’t have a clue about driving pleasure
Some neighbours of mine have two SUVs. They have four kids though
So my opinion is kind of based on if they had two smaller cars, would the need for them to travel in the two cars if they’re all going somewhere have more of an effect than if they all go in the one SUV?
Are two regular sized cars more dangerous than one SUV? How about emissions? My guess would be that the SUV comes out on top
The Automobile Arms Race, everyone gets bigger cars to feel safer from people in bigger cars
SUV drivers can mald when my 2nd hand Volkswagen Up goes the same speed for a tenth of the price.
I can park in just about any nook and cranny I can find.
Been to Florida (Orlando and Miami) and almost every car I saw being driven around was either a giant SUV or a giant two cab truck with the bed empty and with one person inside. Don’t let this happen in Ireland please!
B-b-but I wanna drive a bigger metal box than youuuu in the city centre
Any car can be dangerous . I did 9 years driving for a living from 2002 to 2011 . Can we also mention jerks in mercs and bastards in beamers .
I can understand an honest mistake on the road , we’ve all made them including me but men in posh cars think there dicks have doubled in size overnight and women are airheads .
