I’m from the island of Newfoundland in Canada and we have a great tradition of story and song here. A cousin of mine is a story teller and I was curious how similar traditional Irish story telling is to traditional Newfoundland story telling.
Below is a link to a story about two country boys meeting in a city on the mainland. Is there a similar story in the Irish tradition? I’d love to know how far back this goes.

They’re probably linked somewhat? Newfies do and say a lot of things that I’ve only he experienced before in Ireland. Even the accent can sound a bit Irish sometimes.
Didn’t a large number of Irish get off the coffin ships at Newfoundland, as they couldn’t hack any more?
I’m always struck by just how the Irish accent has persisted in Newfoundland, to the extent that it’s difficult to detect *any* hint of Canadian accent in many folks’ speech. I would assume that many folk traditions, themes, tropes, and stories persist almost as unchanged. I hope so.
I thought the lyrics to My Friends Over You were pretty relatable
