‘It’s absolutely dire’: why UK chicken farmers want to call it a day

  1. I looked up how it look with subsidies. And it does not look good.

    > The government is replacing the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which paid subsidies to farmers to keep them in business, with “payments for public goods”, meaning land managers get paid for improving nature.

    > Each year, ministers are cutting how much farmers get paid under the old scheme while they introduce new ones, which last year commenced with the launch of the sustainable farming incentive (SFI). This paid farmers for looking after their soil.

    > While subsidies were cut by an average of 22% for farmers last year, the money paid out through the SFI equated to only 0.44% of the total funding plan for farmers, leaving farmers asking where the money is going. This year, the cuts are set to be even more stark, with the government planning to slash payments by 36%.

    Though, err, Brexit benefits.

  2. Hopefully everyone who breeds, confines, exploits and kills sentient beings will go bankrupt as consumers make more moral choices.

  3. I can remember arguing with naive idiots on here who thought that the government would replace farmers subsidies in full after Brexit.

  4. They always bleat on about it, but they never shut up shop, because they know they make a decent income and have thousands in subsidies, I bet you’ve never seen a poor farmer.

  5. Good. It’s time we moved away from exploiting and murdering animals.

1.12 **BILLION** chickens are killed each year in the UK alone.

  6. The money was promised at least twice – the NHS and replicating CAP. Guess some people are learning about the Brexit magic money tree.

  7. >Bird flu, higher costs and the rise of meat-free options are pushing poultry producers to reduce flocks or give up entirely

My heart bleeds, factory farming is an abomination.
