ESB error led to Meta receiving no electricity bill for 18 months

  1. Meh, Meta have accrued for it anyway, if their accountants are worth their money. Probably made a few quid on the interest as well.

But how can ESB miss this? Then again, they had a good year, those couple millions can be easily missed……

  2. On top of this the majority of that electricity ended up as wasted heat. I know there are a few heat recovery trials happening at the moment but moving forward we need legislation to ensure the maximum amount of heat is recovered and donated to a public system of infrastructure as a payback for the favourable planning and tax laws which these corporate giants avail of

  3. This combined with the recent scandal of the ESB staff accepting bribes from that new house builder suggests there needs to be a larger investigation into exactly how fit for purpose the management team at the ESB are.

  4. How convenient! I don’t pay bills by error, somehow always end up disconnected and in front of debt collectors. One rule for me, one rule for thee.

  5. “In its most recent sustainability report, Meta said electricity consumption at its Irish data centre had almost doubled over recent years to 635,000 megawatt hours in 2021. The report also disclosed “location-based emissions” for the Clonee data centre, which stood at 187,000 metric tons of CO2 in 2021.

The facility used 928,000 cubic metres of water in 2021, which is equivalent to the same amount of water usage as a 20,000-person town, such as Mullingar”

These fuckers really are using up Ireland.

  6. That’s about €3 million in usage before standing charges, assuming a rate of 30c per unit. Small money for both Meta and the ESB.

  7. Article is paywalled. But I think it should be worth noting that it was for their data center in Clonee and not any other Meta premises such as the HQ in Dublin. The issue was caused by a connection issue to a sub-station as confirmed by the ESB.

  8. Surely to christ the accounting team noticed this after month 3 and the budget accruals…..can’t read behind the paywall but not sure what the story is trying to say….Meta budget for utilities, Meta don’t pay the invoice until its received, the story being what ??

  9. Fine Gael made sure we’re a great little country to do business in. No wonder Trump was singing their praises the other day while he’s hiding away here from his rape trial.

  10. Article clearly states it’s an ESB Networks issue.

Networks aren’t responsible for the billing of commercial or domestic customers.
Networks should be sending the consumption data to the relevant supplier… not stated in article but assumed Elec Ireland?
As they don’t have this data, they can’t issue bills. Unlike domestic customers, large corporations aren’t billed on assessed reads but should be done on interval reads.

As already said, Meta would have accrued for this.

  11. 100% leading up to letting them off due to their error.

Rest of us would be hit with ” it’s your responsibility to make sure bills are paid”

  12. Funny how this sort of stuff happens to rich people and American corporations right?

  13. Not from Ireland but I work in M&A and you’d be surprised how many times it is disclosed during due diligence that a company hasn’t received a utility bill for like six years. Tbf if it was you you’d probably keep your head down too.
