‘My secret’s out’ – Green TD who refuses to fly for climate reasons admits he has pilot’s licence

  1. “Brian Leddin, the Green TD for Limerick City, decided he would practise what he preaches by avoiding aviation for the benefit of the planet.

He has not taken a flight since his election to the Dáil in 2020. But last night he admitted that he possesses a pilot’s licence.”

So he hasn’t flown commercial or private since he decided to not fly.

So the scoop is that man sticks to his promise?

  2. And in tomorrow’s Non News Story, a man – who now claims to be vegan – admits he ate meat until his late 30s.

  3. Man with qualification related to practice he no longer partakes in still has aforementioned qualification.

    Riveting.

  4. That headline is seriously scummy. That bloke should be commended for giving up something he is clearly interested in for the environment but that headline makes him look like a hypocrite. Lousy journalism.

  5. Leddin is an absolute dose and I will laugh my ass off when he loses his seat next GE but this is not a story. He used to have a hobby but he gave it up because it’s not compatible with his public position. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

  6. If he hasn’t flown in three years he hasn’t got the hours to maintain a licence. It’s a use it or lose it thing. I think the minimum is 6 hours as pilot in command.

So does he have a license, or has he lost his license?

  7. Incredible exposé, how did The Ditch miss out on this one?

If this doesn’t bring down that pesky gubbermint, nothing will.

  8. Headline should read ‘Hacks insinuate that anybody who has ever used a toaster can’t be worried about humans destabilising the climate’

  9. Typical convert. After years of dedication to concentrated atmospheric pollution decides to switch tack when the damage is done and platforms it. Feels guilty, has too much to prove.

  10. More quality journalism from the Irish Independent.

People change and their opinions change over time.

Let’s not get into this Yank shite of “well you used to think or behave a certain way so fuck you. I don’t care what you think or do now”.

A knuckledragger nonsense opinion to have of anyone.

  11. I know the Indo is hardly world class, but surely *somebody* there still has a sense of embarrassment about expecting stuff like this to be taken seriously.

  12. The headline to this article is so scummy but what do you expect with the Indo?

Although, I suppose it makes sense that this is a story considering it’s a Government politician actually practicing what he preaches.

  13. Ridiculous article but it does highlight how Irish politicians are falling into the “trap” with regards to the climate issue.

It’s not hypocritical for someone to get on a plane if they are a Green Party politician and it’s not hypocritical for Eamon Ryan to have a government funded BMW taking him to work instead of cycling. They don’t need to go out of their way to do tokenless gestures to give the impression that doing something small, (plastic straw activism) will make a difference, it won’t.

This is successful marketing by the fossil fuel industry to blame individuals for causing the climate crisis. The real people to blame are the top corporations who are responsible for 70% of the emissions and have worked for the last 50 years to even deny the link between fossil fuels and climate change.

  14. Man likes planes. Has a licence to fly but hasn’t flown since he made it a goal to avoid it due to aviations effect on the environment.

The indo is turning into such a rag it gives the sun a run for dogshit journalism

  15. For all The Ditch bashers… Is this what you you want instead? An investigative piece that involved asking the subject a question, getting a straight answer and spinning it into a gotcha piece without the gotcha?

The Ditch may be scraping the bottom of the barrel sometimes but at least it’s a fuckin barrel and not the ghost of a barrel.

  16. Y’know, I think there’s probably a difference in emissions between a four-seater Cessna flying out of Coonagh Airfield and a 200-seater Boeing 737 flying out of Shannon.

  17. As far as I’ve seen the guy made a promise not to fly after being elected and stuck to it. I know this is green bashing but I choose to see it as “breaking news, elected politician keeps his word”

  18. The Ditch breaks stories about serious corruption in FFG, the Independent follows up by writing stories about Green politicians sticking to their promises being a bad thing.

  19. There really should be an end of year round up for “top 100 hack journalism stories of the year” for Irish media outlets.

  20. If he can actually fly the fucking thing and still hasn’t flown since, makes him even more admirable.

More of this from the greens.

Critizise their leadership and betrayal of their values and voters, but we need an honest green party in power, they are to only ones able to commit to practical and sustainable future practice without delaying it over party jabs and civil war throwbacks.
