Digital-i found that viewers from the major European territories spent 22% of their time watching non-English language content in October 2021 compared with 10% two years prior.
Across the same period, the percentage of non-English language shows in Netflix’s catalogue increased from 25% to 31%. Viewing to Amazon’s non-English shows doubled to 16% over the period, while its catalogue increased from 19% to 25%.
October 2021 saw Squid Game dominating but French drama Lupin (pictured) and older but nonetheless popular offerings such as Money Heist and Dark were also flagged as driving the change.
At the current pace, Digital-i predicted that 50% of European Netflix and Amazon viewing will be to non-English language content by 2030.
Under new EU rules, which came into force two years ago, streaming services have to dedicate at least 30% of their on-demand catalogues to local content.
Hollywood ran out of ideas a long time ago, now digging through comic books from decades ago or scanning the world for folk stories to tell to children in a happy feel good movie.
I believe it. Was speaking to my Spanish-speaking dad yesterday and he said, “I reallllly love Korean shows!”
Ah Lupin is such a bad show. Awful.
Excellent! Shared global culture and shared progressive values will help us solve much of what is wrong today.
Cannot wait to see more European shows available on Netflix. Dark was amazing, my all time favourite so far. Pretty sure that 1899 will be at least just as good. Also loved the Italian animation Tear Along The Dotted Line.
It’s a win/win on so many levels. It’ll give dozens, probably hundreds, of talented actors, directors, writers, etc more resources and vastly wider audiences.
I have enjoyed Korean (Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung, so much fun), German, French, Turkish, Italian, Philippine and Indian content last year, I think it’s great that other countries than the US and UK get a chance to showcase their media production.
I have found myself watching a few non-english programs on Netflix recently. Elves, Katla and Space Sweepers were good ones that are worth a watch.
I also tend to leave them in the original language and use subtitles as i find it forces me to concentrate more on the program and not get distracted by phones etc.
I always go out of my way to find non-English stuff on Netflix. It’s just so boring to always get the same US/UK culture. Even bad shows like Katla and The Rain were interesting to watch because they were so different.
Of course, it’s much better when Netflix invests serious money and we get actually good stuff like Squid Game, Lupin, Who Killed Sarah, Dark, Better than Us, etc.
yeah Dark was suprisingly good. Its a really strange feeling to see a series take place in a familiar environment and not in stereotypical US places
I think at this point I watch more Netflix not in English than in English. Some shows are just amazing while others would be average if they were in English but their different cultural background make them a nice change of pace from the American/British shows in the same category.
That said, I can’t believe Lupin is this popular. I liked the first few episodes but the story falls apart later with a bunch of twists which just don’t make any sense and they just go so over the top with the references to the Lupin books that it’s comical.
I think la casa de la papel, and dark where bigger.
This is purely the fact that other cultures are able to provide something relatively new even if not entirely different,
Which is a big change from mainstream english soeaking productions that usually follow the same formulas, and with netflix and other tools, we have access to like a million of them.
This inevitably leads to people seeing many good english shows and many good non english shows, but because 99% of the shows online are english and follow overused themes and concepts thats somehow a huge deal.
Love it. I am happy about that because it broadens our minds and we get to know other countie’s great shows. How else can I find some hidden gems from smaller European countries
Young Royals was great. Can’t wait to see more shows like it.
‘Babylon Berlin’, ‘A very Secret Service’, and ‘Money Heist’ were all very good. I didn’t like ‘Lupin’ as much, but it was still decent.
I adore it. Get to break out of the English speaking entertainment bubble and see the wonderful productions from all over the world. At least half my media consumed now is not in English.
Never dubbed though. I find dubbing to be horrific. Subtitles all the way!
I am not surprised especially after seeing how they butchered The Witcher… Non-murican shows are free from that woke bullshit pushed by force. I am not saying that diveristy bad yada yada yada but the way it is done in english shows is just annoyingly disgusting and forced in most of cases. The mentioned above Witcher turned out to be literally stereotypical netflix adaptation, very different from a book and inconsistent af. When i look at my “watched list” i see mostly non English shows. Spanish dystopian or post-apo shows. Asian and German thrillers/horrors. Few Polish movies. The list goes on. And i really hope to see more of non-English shows because most of them are awesome. Fuck americanization!
So we get more diversity with european actors! This is what i can get behind.
And thank god for that. There are so many incredible artists around the world, creating media thats (somewhat) free of the Hollywood cookie cutter, that it would be a shame if they weren’t as recognized as the content made in the US.
It’s not the language so much for me, the way Americans portray shows has just gotten old a little, European cinema is just better for me. Sadly its volume is so much smaller that you end up watching the American stuff.
I love it. More non-english shows please. Few days ago I started watching German tv show Babylon Berlin and its very good.
Heist and Elite are great Spanish shows. Also, Gomorrah, an Italian crime show, amazing. There was a German one, with this high school student who got into the drug business.. I forgot the name.
Language isn’t really an important aspect in itself imho, production value is. If we start chasing diversity just for the sake of *representation* it’s going to be dreary and uninteresting. Shoutout to Parasite for paving the way for the amazing foreign productions, no matter the origin and language displayed.
