Yes, if only there were more roles that you are born into with massive inherited wealth too

  2. The government can fuck off if they think i’m working myself to death. I’ll simply do what millions of others will and claim disability.

  3. Going to quote my dad…. Only a cunt in a suit, believes a man can dig ditches into his 70s…. Average age of dying is 79,yet the disparities between the wealthy and poorest is 10 years, even in the same area.

  4. Well yeah, I’m in my 40s, by the time I hit retirement age they’ll probably have raised it to about 80 so I probably will be working into my 70s.

  5. Reminder to try and get the highest wage you can so you can put tons in your private pension pot.

It aint gonna get better so don’t even try to fight it, our government is corrupt af

  6. We have ambulance staff working in their 70s that due to dependents, they simply cannot retire and it’s too late to do anything else.

  7. My day at work consists purely of pushing a mouse around and some easy coding. I could do this until I’m 90

  8. Start saving early. State pension is abismal. If you want a decent retirement you’ve got to start putting money in a pension as soon as you can. The expectation of a good state pension is gone, the economics just dont fit together.

  9. Of course we are, the politicians don’t want the plebs and peasants to stop working. Only the rich and privileged should stop working when it suits them!

  10. Workers are likely forced into working into their 70s you mean… I want to be able to enjoy my retirement not work until I’m just in poor health..

  11. Wtf no one in this sub is suggesting that the population should revolt. People saying save this, do this, do that. This is not humane nor achievable for everybody, the public needs to fucking revolt and bring change.

  12. All this delaying pensions etc is just pushing where the bill for people who can no longer work – due to frailty, disability, morbidity and plain old fashioned agesism – around.

Given all this, makes me wonder how the country is going to cope with all the people who will be elders and living in private rented accommodation – with all that entails re housing insecurity, who helps them move etc – and the rapidly increasing housing benefit bill.

Unless they are relying on the poor quality housing they will be forced into, killing them off in job lots re cold and mold.

  13. And this is why, when I’m 60 I’m taking as much of my pension as a lump sum, fucking off to somewhere tropical and blowing it on booze and women. Once it’s run out I’m going to sail off into the big blue.
My life, my rules and my choice of end. Not freezing or starving to death in some rotten flat.

  14. There’s two groups here though:

    The ‘forced to work’

And the ‘but I’d be bored!’ independently sufficient who could volunteer if that’s the case but instead are blocking someone else from moving into a job.

  15. Yea great except that ageism *is a thing in the UK* even though by law it’s not supposed to be a thing.

There are plenty of jobs advertised, however as an older worker, try applying for those jobs and see how far you get.

Trust me, it’s not very far.

  16. I am so bloody depressed when I think about my future. What a dark timeline we’re looking into. I’m only 26, can’t imagine what the pension age is going to be when I’m older

  17. The dramatically falling fertility rate in the west is one of the main contributing factors to this. Currently 1.5ish when replacement rate is 2.3. Almost all countries are suffering from this apart from a few places like parts of Africa.

Eventually, once all the older people die off, it’ll be ok. However, the interim period is going to be very tough as the working age demographic is massively outnumbered by the old, non productive population. It doesn’t matter how much money you have saved if there just isn’t enough people to wipe your ass, provide healthcare and also keep the country running.

Short term band aids are to promote immigration from places like Africa, up the retirement age etc. Longer term solutions will be things like more automation, reshaping society to support and encourage couples to have more children.

Unfortunately the common narrative is that we’re suffering from overpopulation which is true only because less people are dying. It completes misses the real and scary situation of population collapse in the working age demographic though.

We’ve always had the benefit of a growing population so there was always more younger people than old. We’re at the stage where this is going to reverse fast and the adjustment will likely be painful.

  18. People love longer but aren’t necessarily healthy for longer. Its gonna be a race to retire early enough not to have to work till 70….also what job are they gonna do?

  19. This is why i wonder if paying nearly £200 a month into my NHS pension is worth it if im going to need to work until im too old to actually enjoy it

  20. because twho ever we voted for, keeps moving the pension age, until they get that sweet spot where we die before collecting what we paid into.

  21. Make your mind up! I thought everyone in their 50’s took early retirement during COVID, now they’re working in their 70’s

  22. So why aren’t we following France’s example? Oh yeah..that’s WHY we will work til we drop, I guess: no bollocks

  23. I’m just about to start studying to be a nurse…. Guess I’ll never retire, I can’t believe the usual retirement age used to be 65 😞

  24. Fuck this country, fuck capitalism, fuck having to waste something as sacred as life. There’s more life available to live than ever before and increasingly less ability to actually live it than ever. It would be so easy to have a socialist state where everyone works 4 on 4 off and retires at 60. We have enough people for that to be how life works but no, we’re trapped in this bullshit.

  25. This is by design.

This is what our politicians and their backers have been leading us toward, policy by policy, for at least the last fifty years.

  26. My dad spent his entire career working in factories. It did take a toll on his health and any more years and either industrial accidents or he would die early due to working longer till has.
They’re telling people to cut years of their life to work a bit longer. People sitting in jobs longer and cutting off openings for younger people

We should retire comfortably 40-50 (get a house at 20 have it paid off by then) give next gen a chance and make sure workforce is healthier people esp in hard work. Maybe those who are older can be consultants or trainers.

When we are in our 70s most of us won’t be hired or be kept on. One redundancy away from being cut off from interviews. We’ll see PiP job centre stuff like disabled for the elderly. Seeing your benefits cut because no one will hire a 70 year old but being told you could can be hired

  27. How? Most companies fail to employ people over 55, unless they are in professional profession, which the majority of us aren’t. And considering we are told automation will replace allot of jobs in the future, how can people work until 70?

  28. I’m pretty sure I’d be dead or wanting to die by that age, my body is in bits already I can’t imagine how many painkillers etc I’d be on by then.

  29. Bold of the guardian to assume most of us will be here in UK permanently. UK has gone from permanent settlement to a stepping stone among G20 countries. High taxation, NI, crappy QOL, crappy weather etc. has made UK unfavourable among people of 20s and 30s. Nope wont be working till 70 here sir.

  30. Recent [research from Which](https://www.which.co.uk/money/pensions-and-retirement/planning-your-retirement/how-much-will-you-need-to-retire-aNmlv7V7sVe9#how-much-do-i-need-to-retire) pretty much guarantees I’ll be working into the grave.

“If you already have £100,000 in your pot by the time you reach 30, you are already on track to secure a comfortable retirement and can revise your target upwards.”

I’m nearing 40 and have maybe a 10th of that in private pension savings. I’m screwed.
