SNP MP Joanna Cherry says she has been “cancelled” over gender views

  1. Christ alive, the word cancelled means sod all.

She’s a standing MP it is impossible for her to be cancelled in any meaningful way.

Would she also stop hiding behind the fact that she is a lesbian. He sexual orientation has nothing to do with why the venue decided to not host her, it is because of her veiws on transgender people.

  2. >SNP MP Joanna Cherry has told BBC Scotland she has been cancelled by an Edinburgh venue for “being a lesbian with gender-critical views”.

    >She was due to appear at The Stand during the Fringe Festival in August.

    >The venue has cancelled the event after staff said they were not comfortable with her views on transgender issues.

So of course it’s fuck all to do with her sexuality like she’s claiming.

    >”I have never said that trans people should not have equal rights.”

Sure you’re not saying that they shouldn’t have equal rights you’re just saying that they should be treated like they don’t exist.

  3. I’m sure Patriotic Alternative would find themselves cancelled as well if they booked the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to spout their nonsense.

Really she’s not being cancelled. It’s plain and simple naive booking on her part and no venue is obliged to host her. She can go speak at a local village hall if she wants or livestream an event on mumsnet. Why would a comedy club have someone like her to politically rally during The Fringe Festival. That’s just stupid.

  4. > “I’m being cancelled and no-platformed because I’m a lesbian, who holds gender-critical views that somebody’s sex is immutable.

    > She added: “Because a small number of people don’t like my feminist and lesbian activism, I’m being prevented from talking about all of those things in my home city where I’m an elected politician.

Yeah, just throw in that you’re lesbian to paint your critics as homophobes. You’re not at all cancelled because you’re a lesbian.

Gay and Lesbian people once stood there where trans people stand right now. Barely tolerated by society, sometimes not at all. Seen as a crime just for being themselves. It’s really sad seeing activists like Joanna Cherry who fought and got their rights and at least a general acceptance in society are now pulling up the ladder behind them.

  5. Life’s tough when you can’t play the victim. Johanna’s a big girl now and should realise that some opinions are best kept to oneself.

  6. >She added: “Because a small number of people don’t like my feminist and lesbian activism, I’m being prevented from talking about all of those things in my home city where I’m an elected politician.

You’re not being prevented from doing it. There are many different ways to do exactly that, such as an interview on a BBC radio station which undoubtedly reaches your home city.

But instead, she uses the opportunity to whine about being cancelled.

  7. So let me get this straight

She’s advocating for the cancellation of a certain minority group

And is now upset those views are getting her cancelled.

And complaining its because she belongs to a minority group?

  8. The staff of the venue refused to work such an event, and while I understand that Cherry will always do her attention seeking and grifting, what’s the expectation here? If the venue just doesn’t have the staff for such an event, and the statement indicates that this included workers of key positions that might not be easy to replace, then what? What’s the expectation?
It’s not exactly breaking news that Cherry insists that her speech and her speech alone should be unimpeded and that other people who disagree with her are not entitled to do so, given how she has threatened people who disagree with her in the past with legal action, but people are well within their rights to listen to what Cherry says and view it as reprehensible and refuse to serve her.

If the shoe were on the other foot, and a trans person was due to speak at an event but several members of staff realised and took exception to it, I don’t think for a second Cherry and other GCs would be reacting the same as they are now. Even if it were just a regular trans person and not some supposed “radical TRA”, they’d be whining about “compelled speech” and insisting that they were being discriminated against.

  9. > Because a small number of people don’t like my feminist and lesbian activism

    This is intentionally dishonest.

The people who are against her transphobic views don’t have any problem with her being a lesbian. In fact, she might one day be very shocked to learn that it’s her transphobic allies who would happily turn their sights on every other LGBTQ person they can find.

And she sure as hell isn’t being “cancelled” for feminism. Unless it’s some new definition of feminism where targeting a group of marginalised women for your bigotry and hatred is “feminism”.

  10. Still interesting to watch how she happily supports and spreads the LGB Alliance. Despite how she claims to be for lesbians.

For reference th LGB aliance is an organiation that is ll of the below:

The organisation whos cofounder has said *”Im not in favour of flag burning but I recognise the feeling of utter revulsion at what the pride flag now symbolises.”*

The organisation that tried to tout the same AIDs gay panic nonsense but for monkeypox and demanded the forced closure of all gay bars; saunas and leather locations. All against all scientific evidence.

The organisation that proudly promotes Julie Bindel as a voice for all lesbians. Someone actively touts that sexuality is a choice and pushes for choosing a sexuality solely for political reasons.

The organiation that claims bisexuals were not part of the LGBT liberation movement. And I quote “The original gay and lesbian rights movement did not include bisexuals. It is a historical observation.”.

The organisation that claims opposition to gay marriage isnt homophobic

This is the organisation Joanna Cherry happily promotes aligns with and gives talks to. She isnt just a transphobe she stands happily with a group that would erase all lgbtq+ people.

  11. This from the person who is on a national media platform for this and basically anything she says, who’s a sitting MP and who has used her position and legal background to silence critics routinely on the past.

If only she was bloody cancelled the rest of us might get some peace from her non stop shite.

  12. Perhaps when she expresses some feminist views, someone will cancel her for her feminist views.

But until that day, I don’t think her argument quite stands

  13. I find it strange that she doesn’t seem to have an iota of self awareness of the situation. A whole bunch of people tell her that her views have lead to the show being cancelled but there’s no reflection on why those opinions might be abhorent or offensive.

Of course what’s also likely is that she does know that. And doesn’t care.

  14. One would *like* to think that experiencing a smidgen of what she’s been dishing out might encourage a bit of self-reflection.

  15. 61 comments, and I’m apparently allowed to see only half.

This sub is utterly laughable when it comes to any discussion around these issues.

    Basically, no discussion is allowed.

Mods might as well be honest and just ban all discussion of trans related issues – because the current approach is basically banning by stealth.

At least have the courage of your convictions.
