European Royal families connections prior to the French Revolution (1789)

  1. Prince William of Orange was very influential in the Netherlands, but he wasn’t king. We still were a republic in those days.

  2. It took France a long time to figure it out but what France did for Europe was legendary. Their revolutions plus Napolean’s ambition really helped usher in a new, great democratic age for Europe! People hate on the French but their hot blooded ways have done some great things for Europe and the world as a whole!

  3. Napoleon reče:

    Ilirija vstan’!

    Ustaja, izdiha:

    Kdo kliče na dan?

    O, vitez dobrotni,

    Kaj ti me budiš!

    Daš roko mogočno,

    Me gori deržiš!

  4. Gustav III of Sweden seized power in a bloodless coup in 1772, ending the 54 year long Age of Liberty, during which the king had had barely had any power, there was some rudimentary (and highly corrupt) quasi-democracy in place, and the world’s first law protecting freedom of the press was put in place.

Ruling as a self-styled “enlightened despot” he gathered absolute power to himself, removed the press freedom, and spearheaded a couple of failed military campaigns… but also banned torture, severely limited executions, legalized Catholic and Jewish presence in the country (with some limited rights), reformed the economy, reformed the legal system, opened the government for non-nobility, introduced measures to limit the nobility’s gigantic spending on luxury goods, and invested large sums in culture.

As a close friend to the French royals, **he attempted to gather a royal alliance to stifle the French Revolution and restore the monarchy**, though only Catherine II was interested in joining him, and it fell apart some time later.

  5. It’s funny inbreeding is so associated with American rednecks, we as Europeans should remember the real OGs, the royal families of our various nations.
