Minister defends ‘offensive’ coronation-day oath to King Charles

  1. The wording used is ‘all who so desire’ – so it’s less that the public are being asked to, but are being given the opportunity to do so if they want to.

If people want to do so I have no problem with that.

  2. > The transport secretary, Mark Harper, said he would be swearing the oath, to be known as a “homage of the people” and pointed out that MPs already “pledge allegiance to his majesty” on taking their seats.

And what good did that do?

Didn’t seem to have kept any of them from going bonkers.

    > Shabana Mahmood, the Labour elections campaign chief, said it was a “lovely idea to involve the people” and that the oath was a “lovely touch”.

    > She said she, as a Muslim MP, had already sworn allegiance to the king on the Qur’an and would be “joining in at the weekend as well”.

Do they think swearing an oath is just a bit of fun?

  3. Watching all the “anti”s come furiously into their pants in an orgy of indignance at this suggestion has been most fun. They’re absolutely drenching themselves!

  4. Swearing allegiance just seems so cringe in today’s world.

It’s just your typical “be outraged” post. No one really gives a fuck.

  5. The Royal Family eh? Aren’t they just the descendents of the most blood thirsty, psychopathic warlord from the middle ages. All this bullshit about being chosen by God…no, your ancestor was just better at genocide, rape and pillage.

    Pledge allegiance? My bumhole

  6. I mean it’s a bit weird, although I’m sure some people who love the pomp and circumstance will be well into it. How is it offensive though? You don’t have to watch and if you do watch it’s entirely optional to join in

  7. The shocking thing about this is that there are people who think loads of people in the UK will do this!.

I didn’t know the Tories were **This** dislocated from reality.

  8. I’m a Republican I hate the monarchy but asking to swear an oath of loyalty and letting it be optional is better than how it was just a few hundred years ago where all it took really was an accusation from the king that you were a traitor and what evidence of this was there well you refused to pledge loyalty to the king and you could be hanged for it

  9. Swearing an oath to what? The royal nonces?

No thanks; Charles is as much a nonce defender and supporter as the rest of that family. Just have to look how he actively intervened in the 90s to get the police to stop investigating a nonce clergyman before providing said nonce clergyman a home to live in.

  10. It’s not offensive? I mean I’ll die if cringe before contemplating doing it but let the royal fans have a day of it if they want

That “live forever” part’s not gonna age well though

  11. I certainly won’t be doing it, they can sod off. I think it’s just a silly thing they suggested to get everyone involve, so I’m not offended, more embarrassed for us all…

  12. I thought he was meant to serve his subjects/country. He should swear an oath to us.

Over this expectation that most of us are just here to serve elites. It went away for a bit but increasingly we see this attitude in the people actually running the country. Minus the sense of responsibility to look after the country. Scary.

  13. I don’t see why this is worth having a tantrum over. If you read the service, it’s not asking the public to take it, but inviting them to join if they wish. Traditionally only the aristocracy/nobility would take it, so it’s an opening-up of the tradition, but there’s no obligation.
