i hope to whatever gods may be that the eu declare fptp to be evidence of a puppet government and not acceptable to their standards for functional democracy.
what are they going to do, use belarus, camaroon, boznia and the congo as a counter example?
“Erm…. So yeah…. We we sort of fucked up a bit. Can we still be mates, yeah?”

Well, for a start, forfeiting independent trade policy to rejoin the Customs Union would kill two birds with one stone.
It would end customs checks on goods lowering trade flow *and* end our trade deals with say, Japan and Australia, the two deals that were actually negotiated for and not copy-pasted EU ones. The Japanese one being anemic and the Australian one arguably downright harmful for almost no gain.
Forfeiting some “sovereignty” to formally comply with any Single Market rules via legislation *and SM related legal rulings* would go a long way to killing another two birds with one stone.
Doing this to rejoin the Single Market would end standards checks that lower trade flow and restores freedom of movement freeing up those queues for holiday goers in Dover. Additionally restores movement of services, something that is even more important with this service based economy.
Nevermind the country already mostly complies with these rules to begin with. Divergence hasn’t been drastic in the two years since leaving.
Having a say in what those rules or trade policies are is unlikely anytime soon as that requires full EU membership. Regardless, at this point the higher priority is restoring some semblance of economic stability.
I don’t think the EU would be stupid enough to take back the UK. The UK is not treasure island anymore that can be used to bankroll the EU.
