  1. Erdogan can rely on the sheer amount of his voters living in Germany, so I‘m pretty sure he‘s safe. Interestingly, the ones that are eligible for voting in both countries tend to vote mostly for Erdogan but at the same time tend to vote left(ish) in Germany. So in fact, these people are causing trouble in both countries…on the one side, they‘re imagining a utopist vision of a Turkish state that couldn’tbe further from reality, and on the other side, they’re promoting the ultimate economic demise of the German state. Talking about chopping the tree on which you‘re sitting…

  2. The title is actually wrong if it was aimed to cover the elections as a whole because there is also parliamentary elections today. So the correct title would be “2023 Turkish general election”.

  3. What do you have in Turkey as a smokescreen for ‘these are totally not midday poll results Mr Officer’? In Poland we’ve got a fruit&veggie market, “oranges for 21,6” meaning KO (whose colour is orange) is polling at 21,6%

  4. My VPN is set to Istanbul. Interesting to see all these campaign ads on YouTube

It’s a media platform our politicians don’t really utilize

  5. Fingers crossed for Kılıçdaroğlu, but boy, his name is hard to pronounce.

Even listening to it on the Wikipedia page doesn’t help much.

  6. Don’t these threads usually have a lot more info about the country’s voting system, overview of parties and coalitions and links to sites where you can follow the election? Why is this thread so bare-bones?

  7. Erdoğan didn’t wear his “winner jacket” (*winner ceketi*)

Last time he didn’t wear was 2019 local elections (and Istanbul re-run).

Turks will understand what this means.

  8. **Kemal Kilicdaroglu** is the candidate of the *Nation Alliance*, supported by *Labor and Freedom Alliance*.

**Recep Tayyip Erdogan** is the candidate of the *People’s Alliance*.

**Sinan Ogan** is the candidate of the *ATA Alliance*.

**Nation Alliance**: Centre-left, Kemalism (CHP, IYI), Pro-Europeanism (CHP, IYI, DEVA, Gelecek, DP), Euroscepticism (Saadet), Pro-Secularism (CHP, IYI, DEVA, Gelecek, DP), Pro-Parliamentarism, Pro-Democracy, Nationalism (IYI), Pro-LGBT Rights (CHP, IYI, DEVA), Anti-LGBT Rights (Saadet), Islamism (Saadet)

**People’s Alliance**: Right-leaning, Right-wing Populism, Conservatism, Islamism (AKP, MHP, HUDAPAR, BBP, YRP), Neo-Ottomanism (AKP, MHP, BBP, YRP), Nationalism (MHP, BBP), Anti-Nationalism (HUDAPAR), Pro-Secularism (DSP), Anti-Secularism (YRP, HUDAPAR), Pro-Europeanism (DSP), Euroscepticism (YRP, HUDAPAR), Anti-LGBT Rights (YRP, HUDAPAR)

**Labor and Freedom Alliance**: Left-wing, Minority Rights, LGBT Rights, Socialism, Anti-Capitalism, Parliamentarism

**ATA Alliance**: Right-wing, Nationalism, Secularism, Kemalism, Anti-immigration, Parliamentarism.

*According to projections, neither the current government (People’s Alliance) nor the opposition (Nation Alliance, Labor and Freedom Alliance) secure absolute majority in the parliament.*

    People’s Alliance (current government) **298 seats**/600

Nation Alliance (main opposition alliance) **233 seats**/600

Labor and Freedom Alliance (second most-popular opposition alliance) **69 seats**/600

ATA Alliance (minor opposition alliance) **no seats**/600

*Presidental Race is also in dead heat, Kilicdaroglu is believed to be leading by a small margin.*

  9. I voted in the morning. Attendance looked very high, had to wait for 50 mins in line. Length of the line was tripled by the time I left the voting room.

  10. For those who worry about Erdogan not accepting the results and opting for the seditious path, his campaign was unusually low in energy and dim this time around, and he didn’t even imply to his base that if they lose, it must have been because of election fraud or foreign interference or some such thing (the way Trump built up that sentiment for his base, for example).

In other words, he didn’t even attempt to build up a pressure in his base that would allow him to manipulate and make the base malleable for some seditious act on the day of the election.

And I think the reason is that he himself knows that, this time around, even those who will vote for him are angry at him for economic and other reasons, and that he doesn’t have his old leverage with them which would gave him the influence to incite them to some serious action, whatever that may be.

The current condition of Trump is again a good analogy here. His voters will vote for him despite whatever the opposition says about him, but even parts of his voters are sick of him and are a bit disillusioned.

In summary, nothing to worry about regarding not accepting the results because 1) he didn’t do the preliminary work necessary for it, 2) his voters wouldn’t take action even if he belatedly tried to cause an uproar.

  11. Turkey is one of my favourite places, I have very fond memories of my time there and I really would like to return soon

I hope for the best for all Turks and that someday we will be in the EU together

  12. voted for erdogan and hoping he wins! probably alone in this in a sea of redditers. proud our election holds so much weight over the international community though, including europe
edit: inb4 cope alleging ‘election fraud’ just because the general public doesn’t agree with them

  13. Even if KK ultimately loses, progress has been made. The gap to Erdogan was closed and the opposition united. In 5 years even more young people will be voting. Turkey will eventually be reborn and take its place in the world.

  14. For people who didn’t watched any previous Turkish elections: For psychological purposes usually the counting starts with weird odds like %80 Erdoğan to %20 Opposition and the gap closes as more votes get counted. So don’t get suprised when the first results are far away from the polls and stuff.
