Train stations to play classical music to fight antisocial behaviour

  1. They already do this in Hull’s main train station, and it is fucking horrific. They play it over ancient tannoys, so it all comes out sounding like [noise music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPYETrGy-0Y&t=105s).

I don’t mind either classical or (actual) noise music to be honest, but it’s all just a mess of random distorted high frequencies being blasted at you. It certainly puts me off visiting any of the shops there, and it’s really irritating whenever you have to wait ages for a bus or a train.

I’d love to see the details of their trial, and the actual data it yielded, because I also just don’t see how it can possibly work.

  2. This appeared in a railway station near me and in the same visit a guy near me was threatened with battery by a loudmouthed member of a gang of loitering youths

I don’t think the music was helping. It sounded horrific through the tannoys

  3. They’d do better playing Jazz. I’m listening to some Muhal Richard Abrams at the moment and while it’s incredible music I can imagine it could scare people away if they weren’t ready for it.

  4. My local station is now completely unstaffed. It was rife with antisocial behaviour before and nothing has changed since losing guards several years ago, it is also now a popular spot for suicide for the same reason. Classical music won’t stop drug dealers or people out looking for a fight, it might annoy them but those really determined to be antisocial will just smash the speakers playing the music.

  5. You aren’t going to fix huge, _huge_ societal issues in the UK with some classical music. This stinks of some government twat in London having a ‘brilliant’ idea while on the crapper

  6. Great. I’m still getting approached by 6 young guys on bikes outside the station at night, but now Ride of the Valkyries is playing for some fucking reason

  7. zoomers are so lucky, when I was a teen there was a craze of putting super high pitch alarms outside shops. the type of pitch you can only hear till you’re about 20.

  8. Shipley Station in Bradford does this already. Its quite nice tbf. Dunno if it stops rotters being rotten but still, not unpleasant

  9. This is the opposite of “the music makes them violent”.

I want to see some literature that this is legit reason behind this.

  10. The McDonald’s I worked at tried this. I personally saw no improvement with the anti social behaviour and in some cases I had drunk men screaming at me about how shit they thought it was.

  11. Idk they do this in my local McDonald’s and it definitely didn’t deter those who engage in this kind of behaviour

  12. They used to play weird music in the bus station in Leeds and that never stopped anybody, especially not that man who’s always howling like a wolf

  13. Just like on Benidorm when Joyce temple savage thought playing classical music by the pool would drastically reduce crime and violence!

    Nee bother, pet

  14. Maybe more cheap music venues so bored teenagers can let out their boredom and need to show off to their mates in a more controlled space. Those with poor guardians and hardship might find better role models
