Five-month-old baby in hospital after reported dog attack in Caerphilly

  1. Poor kid, hopefully no lasting injuries. No dog should be allowed near an unwatched child. Will be interesting to see the breed but when they’re this small, any could be a threat.

  2. I still remember years ago having a staffie/pit come up to me and it was quite an intimidating moment. The dog clearly didn’t like me being in it’s path. After a minute of it going nuts and me avoiding eye contact, not moving, it’s junky owner showed up out her face and didn’t react when I told her to leash her dog up. This is why we need licences to own dogs because I could’ve been mauled, imagine it was a clueless kid instead of me and they decided to run

  3. My first and last experience with a staffie/pitbull was watching one beeline unleashed across the children’s play park where I was playing with my nephew in, towards a little terrier some old fella was walking. It proceeded to rip the little dog’s face off before it could be detached. The little dog’s orbital socket was exposed and I see where its eyeball sat in the cradle.

I was later told that the dog had to be put down. I don’t know what happened to the staffie.

  4. There are far too many dogs in this country, and the increase in attacks is simply as a function of this situation.

What is the growth in UK pet ownership?

24% of all owners acquired their pet in the last two years, meaning that 5.4 million pets have been acquired since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

I hope the baby makes a good recovery.

  5. Feels like bad mix of lately

    * lockdown pets poorly socialised with people and other animals

    * usually breed of dogs historically used in bear baiting. All pets bite but some due to cruelty how it was breed to takedown bears turns the dog into a weapon. It needs extra care and in some circumstances not housed in stressful environments. However brought because it’s a tough macho pet and owner encouraged the outbursts and is not in control

    * we don’t really teach on any level school years to adulthood how to be a responsible pet owner and even how to behave around wild animals. When an animal does get violent there are ways to survive or be safe or know the early signs to de-escalate. I wonder how often in these attacks the dog showed signs it was building up to attack where it could’ve been removed or muzzled to prevent harm. Knowing the signs an owner too is encouraging the violence

  6. Poor baby, I’m glad to see the injuries are not life threatening, I just hope they have no facial scarring. Terrible!

  7. Houses and people in that area look exactly how I imagined they’d look, before any of the “Blame the owners not the dog!” crowd turn up
