Can someone please help me translate my great-grandmother’s embroidery?

  1. ” I am kneeling and begging to the Lord God, please bring back my beloved husband who has gone far away. ”

    or

“To the lord God i bow down and beg ! for my long gone dear husband give him back to me.”

(kneeling / bow = “to kiss the ground”)

  2. Just to clarify and add to all of these great translations : it is not clear if said husband is dead or just didn’t return from some – presumably dangerous – trip to someone faraway land. Hungarian has the same extra meaning to the word “gone” as English does, so “gone far away” probably means he died and is in heaven

  3. The woman, seen on the picture is basically begging for god to return her husband or at least I think. I don’t know what “1928=24” means in this embroidery.

  4. Thank you so much everyone for the help. My grandma said her mother made this when her husband left to America

  5. Hi everyone very sorry I don’t know how to use this app, grandma’s memory is like an ocean tide coming and going. I read the translation to her (thank you so much for the translation everyone!) and she was able to read the Hungarian again. I think she just has a hard time translating these days.

I think this really helped jog her memory because she just came up to me and said her mother made this when her husband immigrated to Canada ahead of them to prepare a home for her and her two children, and she was pregnant with their third child. She made this embroidery because she missed him so much. I had never heard this story until just now.

Thank you so much hungary Reddit for helping me!!! My family is going to be so happy to learn this history.
