And they use a picture of a blue tit…whose population is increasing 🙄
this is fine because i know a guy who worked on a farm and he says one of the guys he worked with knew a guy who growing up heard that crows eat baby lamb eyeballs, so it’s fine
Terrible news, and still so many people aren’t taking such an ecological disaster seriously.
If this was a report on the decline of Birds from some far off part of the world you just know their would be countless complaints about deforestation or destruction of habitat, but cause its domestic no one really cares.
We’ve got to slash animal agriculture. That’s the silver bullet here. Free up more land, and reduce overall pesticide use.
Pesticides, loss of forest, hedgerow destruction. As much as rural areas are close to nature they spend most the time poisoning it
Most people don’t give a shit. They’ll buy an electric car but will tear out their garden to have a place to charge it. Maybe they’ll sign a petition or two, or re-use a shopping bag, but fuck actually making a meaningful change to their lifestyles.
We would need to build a house every 5 min to keep up with immigration alone , so not like the birds are going to have much room to live at the rate the country is growing .
The most environmental thing we could do at the moment is simply reduce immigration to a manageable level , in the last 20 years 4/5th of the population growth have been due to it .
Aswell as everyone’s garden and homes being barren waste lands of gravel and plastic which is reducing the food the birds live off .
And I wonder what could be the cause? Could it be that releasing millions of non-native predators into the habitat have any effect? I fucking wonder.
I think predation and disturbance by domestic and feral cats is also a contributing factor. For the first few years I lived in my current house one of my hedgerows used to be full of small nesting birds in springtime.
About 4 years ago one of the neighbours got a cat and it’s forever hunting. I wfh and see it all day every day. Literally sits vigil near the bushes. Now there’s zero birds nesting in there.
I think we should probably drop the “great” part of great britain, we aren’t doing so good right now.
This is not a new phenomenon, modern farming that relies on insecticides and fungicides and artificial fertilisers are insect deserts, monocrops are unnatural and really unsustainable, I don’t live in a city and I remember driving around and getting so many bugs splats on the front of my car, now I hardly get any, also the size of fields has increased substantially, so much spraying, there is no food for the small mammals and birds, the ground is poisoned so the biodiversity in the soil doesn’t exist in these fields, the base of nature’s food chain is the insects, also, we need small farms with smaller fields, old fashioned crop rotation with farm animals fertilising the fields with their dung, please watch a youtube video One Hundred Thousand Beating Hearts which explains how regenerative animal husbandry can restore the land and nature’s diversity.
Of course they do! wherever I go, I see all these greenery but very very little of fruitful trees. how do you expect them to survive?!
You want more immigration, more houses, more money and expect all that and to also not affect the animals that live here? You can’t ULEZ your way out of this one.
Magpies are on the increase in my area and as a result, song birds are down to barely any. They are difficult to control though.
So many comments about cats as always on reddit, not even the article looks to them though.
Humans are the biggest problem, destroying habitats.
> Woodland birds have been the most impacted since 2015 with 59% of species showing a decrease.
> Farmland birds have shown the biggest decline overall since 1970, with 63% of species showing a decrease.
Woodlands and farmlands more effected by humans as well.
Birds of Prey are on the increase while other birds are on the decline as well. That will of course put some others in decline.
How much could be restored by replacing lawns with wildflowers?
>It revealed that centuries of farming and industry have made the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in Europe. When compared to the G7 countries, the UK is at the very bottom in terms of how much biodiversity still survives.
I’m a big supporter of hydroponics and vertical farming for this reason. The countryside and ‘nature’ that many people imagine of rolling fields is just industrial land by a different name. With concentrated farming using modern methods, we could re-wild so much of our landscape and actually return to nature.
About what expect from a Gov’t more interested in useless political manoeuvring than cleaning up the shit encrusted rivers and beaches..
Spend 5 minutes looking at the current Enviromental Minisiter, Therese Coffey. The UK Enviroment stands little chance with these selfish charlatans in power.
Doesn’t this mean that more than half are either steady or increasing? Doesn’t sound as bad when you say it from a glass half full perspective.
Lions, kill them all for I care. Elephants don’t add anything to my life. Keep the whales or eat them, not bothered. But dicky birds. Come on. Seriously, a robin in a tree? Sparrows playing and pecking and chirping. A wren hiding in a bush? These are God’s best creations.

that’s not a very shocking statistic, maybe the other half are increasing

>Bird populations in the UK continue to freefall as the government moves further away from achieving its own targets to protect nature.
>New data released by the UK government reveals that 48% of bird species have shown a decrease in just five years between 2015 and 2020.
>Birds such as the turtle dove, capercaillie, tree sparrow and grey partridge are now less than a tenth of their numbers from 50 years ago.
>**The key findings**
>• 48% of all bird species have declined between 2015 and 2020.

>• Farmland birds have shown the biggest decline overall since 1970, with 63% of species showing a decrease.
>• In 2021, 130 breeding species were on average 12% below their number in 1970.
>UK bird populations have steadily declined over the past 50 years.

Maybe they should spend less time flying around and more time being social and looking for a partner.
It’s been ages since I’ve seen a Griffin
Vegans did this (or at least the non-organic ones have). Every time you have a Kale sandwich, a little Robin dies 🙁
On a serious note, the continued use of nitrates, herbicides and pesticides is not sustainable in industrialised agricultural horticulture.
41% of all species in the UK are in decline. We’re not the best custodians of nature:-
