1.5m to overtake: New awareness campaign on traffic near cyclists

  1. These awareness campaigns should be much, much broader and include other stuff. So many people don’t use indicators, cut lanes, cross into oncoming traffic lanes in turns, don’t stop at pedestrian crossing, etc.

Oh and there should be a campaign for cyclists too as many are dangerous to pedestrian: You too have to stop at pedestrian crossings and yield to foot traffic. If you are an adult, then you are not allowed to cycle on the sidewalk. You are only allowed to drive down the wrong way of a oneway street if there’s a sign explicitly permitting cyclists to do this.

  2. Quite frankly all those awareness campaigns are a waste of money imo. As if people change their behavior because of some billboard ad or, more recently, youtube videos.

  3. Quite funny how as a driver when I cycle I try not be a nuisance and do my best to make space and pull as far as possible to the right so I don’t block everyone and that required distance can exist.

When I drive and others cycle it is a big F you in the face. The bike path is parallel to the road but they will cycle 2-3 next to one another to take up the lane like a car. If a bike lane is not available they will do their best to be in their world with headphones or talking to one another ignoring the traffic jam that ends up behind.

I guess when on the road cyclists can go about their business while everyone else has to be their b*itch.

This country sometimes has its priorities upside down and I have yet to see a campaign to raise awareness on the code of conduct for cyclists on the road. I mean it can be one sentence and made as cheaply as possible in comic sans font (cos most cyclists on our roads are a joke) : You cycle ? Don’t be a d*^k!

  4. The only way people will respect the 1.5 m is if there was a law to run a Go-Pro that records passing cars, and if they put the cyclist in a dangerous situation during a reckless passing maneuver, they would get a ticket from the police and lose points.
The same should apply to cars.
Yesterday I had a situation where a car passed me just before a right turn where it was impossible to see if anyone was coming from the other direction.

  5. I think they would raise more awareness if they give opportunities to drivers to become a cyclist for a day. They should do a yearly cycling day where they would cut the car access to few secondary roads crossing the country + the Lux inner city up to the P+R so the drivers would do the full commute by bicycle or at least drive and park their car at the P+R and do their last commuting miles by bicycle (or public transport), given extra bicycles would be offered from the P+R. This kind of event happens in few cities like Paris (not mentioning Amsterdam or Copenhagen where it’s just kind of everyday like this).

  6. i cycle regularly and i have to admit that my worst experiences of people behaving arrogantly in traffic come from other cyclists (just the other day i was commenting how probably the worst thing on the road right now is a middle aged man who is solving a midlife crisis with a bike instead of a ferrari) and RGTR bus drivers. the rest, meh, there’s always the odd idiot or distracted driver, but the first two groups i get nervous seeing from 200m.
