I went to Hungary in 2016, so the best part of a decade ago but more than 5 years into Orbán’s premiership. The Budapest History Museum section on WWII was wild. I can’t remember the exact wording now, but the explanation for Hungary joining the Axis was something like “because the Allies refused Hungary’s request to renegotiate the Treaty of Trianon, Horthy had no choice but to turn to Hitler to try to get a fairer settlement.”
Now obviously Orbán didn’t write those words but it speaks to the occasionally ambivalent attitude to Hitler on the right in Orbán’s Hungary.
