Poll shows that British support for the monarchy is at an all time low

  1. That’s probably because they’re a pointless throwback to when people were physiologically conditioned to believe the paedos were a benefit instead of the blight they actually are.

  2. “All time low”? I doubt that. They have no actual power now. I expect they were less popular when they could have your head chopped off on a whim

  3. This is such a non story. From the article (my bold):

“a quarter of those questioned said the monarchy was “not at all important / should be abolished” – and that proportion has remained **unchanged** since 2021.”

  4. I wonder how many of the people saying that they support the monarchy would want to install an unelected head of state if we *didn’t* have one.

You rarely hear French people or people from other countries where they got rid of their monarchs arguing for restoring the monarchy!

  5. Wonder how much of the coronation merch is actually selling, all the big retailers are pandering to the RF and put these items in virtually every store- I have a sneaking suspicion, however, that it’s not really flying off the shelves.

  6. I think we have room for improvement. Sweden and Spain seem to do OK with their Royals. They cost them about 5% of what we fork out, do the whole royal thing in the background and are generally well liked. I think we could learn a bit from them.

  7. Makes sense, Liz was a popular monarch and all that anyone remembers since she was around for so long. Imo the only way they’re gonna keep going is if they start actually standing for something more aggressively. Charles has been pretty outspoken about the environment but maybe if he did something about it then he’d garner some support

  8. ‘all time low’ – really? Lower than when Charles 1 was beheaded? Or are we just comparing him to one other monarch and pretending it represents all of history?

  9. To be honest, things are so catastrophically shite right now, and we have more pressing issues to concentrate on instead of these people who have zero problems. Lol they’re not remotely relatable so that definitely makes it worse imo

  10. Charles is only going to push that support down even further – I don’t think he’s very likeable.

There might be a brief spike in support if/when Will & Kate take to the throne, but I honestly believe the monarchy’s days are numbered.

  11. good

Most of them are just old fucktards that dont really do anything to help and take taxpayers money to pay for a big coronation because *fuck it why not* *cough cough charles*

also it seems kinda outdated which idk is a good reason to not like them but it is a reason

    oh and theyre unelected

  12. His brother is a pedo, his first wife died under questionable circumstances, they hoard wealth like dragons and the public are supposed to just accept being poorer while he splurges out on a massive ceremony?!

Edit: sorry I had to vent.
Edit 2: auto correct changed hoard to heard.

  13. All monarchs everywhere only hold their positions of power and privilege because at some point in the past their ancestors were more effective murderers than everyone else. Monarchies are an utterly reprehensible and disgusting vestige of humanities dark past that should be left in the trash bin of history where they belong.

  14. I’d like to see a monarchy that can financially sustain itself. But I’d not like to see no monarchy at all.

Like it or not it’s a huge part of our heritage and history as a nation, and if it went it’d leave one hell of a gap which would make our dull nation even duller.

Feels like there’s an element of cancel culture at play here too which is causing enough problems around the world. I don’t like something so get rid of it. But that’s another subject altogether.

  15. I still support the Monarchy. I like King Charles and hope he continues to push for environmental issues.

Anything would beat a horrific American system of President Sugar / Farage / Corbyn.

    No thank you

  16. The fact that this vulgar display of wealth and power is happening in the middle of a cost of living crisis probably hasn’t helped their numbers

I suspect most people couldn’t give a shit one way or the other normally but gold coaches and diamond hats are a bit harder to take when you’re struggling to make ends meet

  17. Norwegian support for the Norwegian monarchy is hitting record highs, and they pay more per capita for their monarchy, and get a lot less diplomatic power from their monarchy.

  18. Lower than after princess Diana died is a bit of a shock they were openly hated in the days between her death and the funeral

  19. We have a billionaire king and people can’t heat or eat at the same time and we have to pay for his coronation. What do you expect?

  20. Despite the headline, the article confirms that a majority of Britons support the monarchy and that less than a quarter want to abolish it (they lumped that in with the “not at all important” group, presumably to hide how small a minority abolitionists actually are).

_Of course_ the majority of comments are from people who seem to think there’s a mandate to abolish the monarchy tomorrow…

  21. This nothingburger again, how many times are people going to rehash this?

It’s support amongst those surveyed, (only 6,638 people combined with data extrapolated from a patchwork 40 year archive) hardly convincing. Plus none of the survey gathering data has been made available so it’s most likely NatCen faked a headline grabbing survey to advertise themselves, (no different to other business using the coronation as an advertisng gimmick) or were paid by some group to come up with it. Yes Prime Minister has an entire episode about how surveys are worthless.

It never ceases to amaze me how people still misunderstand/can’t be bothered to actually look up the Crown Royal Estates’s finances and good works which are all readily requestable and verifiable. Like in the .U.S. once the bullshit narrative takes hold of the brain facts don’t matter.

    **Finances**

They hand over all of what they earn to the Treasury for the public purse getting back only 20% which is then taxed. They don’t have to by law but they generally pay:

    Capital gains tax.

    Income tax on selected income.

    Value Added Tax.

Council tax on their individual estates, (eg: Buckingham Palace= £1,500.00 per year).

Thats alot of tax for people who supposedly don’t pay taxes.

(Note: Given how much they have provenly generated and given to the public purse he has paid for his own coronation several times over).

    **Good works**

Started and fund hundreds of charities to help people everyday.Fund community projects, (eg: Town regenerations and parks).

Invests in and promotes eco technology development and provision. (He is driven around in a no emission wine byproduct fueled Rolls Royce).

Funds environmental and cultural conservation projects.

Non profit sustainable seafood production. (Those in Scotland were the only ones not to lobby the .S.N.P. to bypass the .E.U.’s ban on cancerous carcinogenic neonocticides).

And much more. All funded by their own private money and the money they give to the public purse. Money the Treasury would never otherwise provide.

Then again why let a little thing like facts get in the way of blind prejudice?

  22. American here so I have no dog in the fight (as you know we have our own political issues)

I love the monarchy. The history is so cool. I’ve traveled to the UK *just to visit* famous castles and politically historical sites.

In currently reading “A woman of Influence” about one of Princess Diana’s ancestors. So good!

I get what you’re saying though and I’d very likely feel the same in your shoes. But still. So cool.
