Without taking away from the fact that the vast majority of serious sexual assaults are male on female, as are domestic homicides, I don’t know a single guy that hasn’t at some point technically been sexually assaulted by a woman, or hit by one.

I’m a circus performer, working in bars, nightclubs and stage shows. As a result we’re around drunk people a lot. In the last 12 months, I have experienced:
1) Had a middle-aged woman reach between my legs from behind and pull my underwear down to reveal ‘what I was working with’ to her friends. (Whilst I was holding two lit fire-sticks!)
2) Had multiple women pull at costume – this seems most prevalent when doing work as a stilt Walker ‘because it’s just right *there*’ apparently.
3) Had a drink spiked by a woman whilst I was working. She poured a shot of vodka in a bottle of water whilst my back was turned. I don’t drink alcohol when working and if I hadn’t have spotted her I could’ve lost my insurance and credibility if something had subsequently gone wrong.
4) Inappropriate comments about how I look and what I ‘could do for them’.
5) Been pulled off stage as they’ve grabbed my costume. Halfway through a cabaret performance.
6) Had my personal areas groped more than I can count. More often than not to remark on my manhood to their friends.
On a night-out, I can see how this behaviour is easy to laugh off, or not feel particularly affected by, or even flattered by. However by not calling it out, it means that those that work in this industry are seemed to be over-sensitive when they complain back to them.
If I came to your job and sexually assaulted you Jane, I think you’d complain. Please don’t sexually assault me at mine, just because you’ve been on an Espresso Martini binge.
Bonus story: I was pinned against a wall by a police-officer in Newcastle for shouting at a woman who amongst her friends had pulled my costume away to ‘size me up’. My back was literally against a wall, and not wanting to physically touch anybody, my instincts took over and I raised my voice to get them away from me. I then got reprimanded by the agency I was working for, for raising police interest in the venue I was working in.
Sucks man.
