What’s the story with these? A stranger put them down in front of me on the dart to Connolly station today, after a minute or two the same person came back and picked them back up?

  1. “I have no money to feed my children, but I really, really need these tissues??”

Wipe your nose on the seat like a normal person.

  2. I think they might be(and I say think because I don’t actually know) trying to beg without “begging”. So they sell you the tissues, and can’t get done for begging.

Some of the scams that some people try can be ridiculous.

I once saw a woman carrying a small baby, while she was eating an ice-cream cone (maybe a 99, but I didn’t see a flake as the cone was nearly finished). Said lady then spat the ice-cream onto the babies face, and approached a group of elderly ladies asking for money as her child was sick.

Edit. I am wrong. It has been pointed out that begging is perfectly legal, as long as not aggressively begging. My comment is void, I will leave though as others have responded.

  3. tissue beggars have been around all over the place for many years with people suspecting it’s part of organised crime. It’s pretty much the same card used in many places.

  4. Seen this before at connelly before.

    REDACTED beggers pulling a con.
Sometimes, they come up to whisper to you and ask to read the card close to them. Sob story and looking for money.

    Be careful and be aware.

Reminds me of one time when a lad, came into a petrol station and tried to get 10 euro petrol free cause he needed to take the missus to the hospital cause she was in labour….

He was waiting around for about 20 mins asking staff and customers… herself sat in the car calmy and was far from pregnant.. just fat. They tried it again within a few weeks later, lol

  5. I first encountered this on the trains in Buenos Aires. People would come through the cars and place a pack of gum or some toy directly on your lap, 99% of the people wouldn’t even look at them, and then the person would come back and pick the items back up. Very odd experience.

  6. It’s just a common begging tactic. The card is to get sympathy so you’ll pay them more for the tissues. If you just ignore it they’ll take the tissues back after a while like they did with you.

  7. I’ve heard, but never seen, this one before with the added step of if you even move the tissues somebody suddenly shows up and starts demanding money because you touched them and they can’t sell them. Purple monkey dishwasher maybe, but who can tell.

  8. This one’s been doing the rounds for a while. A common one I’ve seen was ‘I’m deaf/mute etc, etc’.

It you think it’s a scam, just assume it is.

  9. Same thing just happened to me on the train from Dublin to Newbridge. Interesting that it happened in a few places around the same time on the same day… Hum…

  10. People should not feel bad for these people, the ones doing it are 99% of the time professional beggars. They’ll be off the train and into a car better than yours or mine.

  11. It’s a sign of Ireland’s “exaltation among the nations”: we now have the same organized begging scourge as every other advanced nation.

  12. My favourite Dublin beggar memory is the fella I used to pass on my way to school sitting outside the Dart station with 2 crutches and a sign saying he was disabled and homeless.

One morning he was obviously late for rush hour, best time to make his money, and I saw him running down the road with the crutches under his arm to get to his spot on time.

    Funny stuff.

  13. Had a member of a certain community come up to me in cork hand me a card saying he’s deaf and could I give him 10 euro for the bus to Limerick I signed hello to him he called me a prick and fucked off

  14. Same thing happened to me on the maynooth train. I was actually waiting at connolly and i seen a group of the security lads go up to the guy. He looked to be Roma and had a backpack stuffed to the brim. The guards came up and were asking whats in the bag and that they had reports of him selling tissues

  15. It’s been a ‘feature’ of the Paris metro since at least the 1970s. They’re just a way of extracting money out of commuters and tourists in an enclosed space. Normally it’s not particularly agressive, but on occasion it can be if you pick up / take the tissues. You’re best to just ignore them and let them collect them back up again.

  16. Used to get these in London on the tube all the time. Big gang of people used to rake in thousands begging this way

  17. Happened to me. I had a desperately runny nose so took out a tissue and gave my nose a good honk. I didn’t see the guy around so I neatly re-packaged the tissue and acted all innocent.

  18. There is a criminal practice known as organised begging. People actually get trafficked into western countries to take part in it.

  19. Scammers, had one asking for money for food on the train, tried to give him the mcdonalds i just bought and he scoffed at me

  20. Roma begging gangs. They do this shit on the public transport in San Francisco too it’s a worldwide gang.

  21. Here in Poland that would be either Gypsies / Roma kids pushing roses or some cut flower into your hands if you’re with a lady or, actually more often, same folks putting keychains or some other tiny, cheap crap on your table at a cafe, all claiming to be deaf artists. If you decide to buy it you’ll be expected to pay some exorbitant sum, like the equivalent of 20-30 EUR. Pay less and you’ll be met with verbal onslaught or, at best, guilting into paying more. I also seen v similar tactic all over Europe, many many years ago.
