“Many of us over here are sick of you” – caller Mary in Nottingham tells BBC’s Nolan “we should get rid of you” and wants Great Britain to have a referendum on NI remaining part of the UK

  1. This is why I laugh at loyalists… to the English, they’re as irish as the South and Republicans.. and the English government would rather just cut the north loose than have to pay the massive money sink that is our budget .

Even when we’re mentioned on TV the lack of enthusiasm of “and northern ireland” speaks volumes of how the country is perceived in England…

“But our fleg, I’m British”.. sure you’re a British citizen.. but to the English you’re not really British. (Exceptions to every rule etc, I’m talking about the general public feeling not every individual English person or MP)

  2. It’s Northern Ireland’s fate to be paid lip service by everyone outside of imminent crises. Everyone views them as trouble mainly due to endless grievances, shit economy, weirdo religious ideology and probably a few other things. It’s easy to award Derry Girls a BAFTA, it’s much harder to live with their parents.
    .

  3. To be fair to Mary on this I think they could actually do it if they wanted. Like the GFA says to take the territory by popular vote in NI and in Ireland would be an option but they could very much cede the territory to Ireland. Would be a dick move to the unionists but my point is it’s technically possible.

  4. I wonder what people in the UK would choose if they had to choose between keeping Northern Ireland (as a part of the UK) and a 100% perfect Brexit. I think a lot of them would pick the perfect Brexit.

  5. Funny thing is he bangs on about England having no right to decide their future but English voters decided NIs place in Europe with their brexit vote

  6. Fair play to her in terms of an English person actually understanding what Northern Ireland is in terms of its place in the union, I’d say a huge majority in England don’t have her grasp of the country. She seems to hate the place which makes it all the more hilarious that she’s a regular listener to the show, listening to it just to get more pissed off and entrenched on her position.

  7. Bullshit of Nolan to say she has no right to want Northern Ireland to go. She’s entitled to want whatever she wants.

  8. I think at this point independence is the only way forward for Northern Ireland. The UK can have all the referendums it wants, Ireland can have all the referendums it wants, and the north can as well- but in the end if they stay part of the UK or reunification happens then a chunk of the country will not accept it. And in the case of reunification I think we’d see a kicking off of some very unsavoury shite.

Best option is to kick the crutch of Westminster out from under the DUP and cut the north completely loose. Give them a few years of figuring their shite out. They’ll either swim, or made a decision in some direction as to where their future lies.

  9. I live in the Republic and any NI people I’ve spoken to, and they’re mostly Catholics with a few Protestants all the Catholics all say the same thing. They have to pretend they want a united Ireland because that’s what they’re told to want but the reality is that they’re better off in the UK and would vote to stay in the UK

  10. UK as a whole is evolving in their demographics – it’s fair to say that these younger people, foreign nationals aren’t going to hold any affinity to NI or the history leading to it. Why would they care ?

Mary is right too, they must be so embarrassing. NI unionists have never evolved and have been left in the past, they know it too. They pull out all the dramatics and know gives a flying fuck about them. Tbh something will give in the future – I’m not too sure that’s 32 counties but something will change

  11. Ulster thinks its as much part of the UK as Cornwall or the isle of Man. The writing is on the wall for the North. At this stage it looks like a loveless marriage England is trying to get out of.

  12. As a non Irish person I see that most British people can’t differentiate between a Cork accent and a Belfast one. At least to the English the Irish are basically “All The Same” and they basically couldn’t give a toss about the North, or are even aware which part of Ireland belongs to whom. It really is a bit sad when the Unionists wave their Union Jacks, toast the Royals and vow to fight to the death for a country who does not want them and many if not most consider them a pain in the backside.

  13. Lived in the UK (Wales for a while then England) for quote a while now.

I don’t think this lady’s opinion is particularly prevalent, I’d say the majority of people are just ambivalent about NI. That said I thiink most people, quite rightly, think the DUP are a bunch of clowns.

As others have said, most English people will consider folks in NI to be Irish rather than British, regardless of which way they lean. Must be disappointing to be a unionist, the folks this side of the Irish sea don’t think you’re like them, or they don’t give a shite about you either way.

  14. I don’t think a UK referendum for the fate of the occupied counties would go very well for loyalism.

  15. As an Englishman I detest the Unionists. They dragged us into a 30 year war with their 17th century bigotry and even now they’re fucking up the politics of NI and the rest of Britain.

I live in hope that Ireland will be united again. I’d vote to give up NI in a heartbeat. Those orange bastards that can’t live with that will have to come and live in England because they’re our problem. Scotland already has more than its fair share of cunts so we can’t inflict them on the jocks. There fucking orangism and related stupidity won’t be tolerated in England.

  16. Not surprised the caller was from Nottingham. Had a weekend there back in 2008 and on three separate occasions I was hated for being irish. Mad place
